For non-Virtual Office or Software as a Service (SaaS) firms

When you open a Microsoft Excel workpaper, the Workpapers CS add-in is automatically loaded. The add-in is needed to link the workpaper to the Actions > Enter Trial Balance screen in the main application. If there is a problem with the add-in, you may experience one of the following.

  • Cells display #VALUE or #NAME.
  • The Workpapers CS menu may not appear on the toolbar or ribbon bar in Microsoft Excel.
  • Documents are not automatically returning to the binder, meaning that the status of the workpaper displays as Checked Out instead of Available when the workpaper is closed.

Use the following steps to correct the functionality of the Workpapers CS add-in.

If you have documents that are not automatically returned to the binder when you close the workpaper, click here to view steps to recover the documents before continuing with the information below.

  • If you want to return a copy of the document that does not have your most recent changes, right-click on the workpaper and choose Discard checkout.
  • If you want to return a copy of the document that includes your most recent changes, right-click on the workpaper and choose Return to binder.

If you receive an error message when performing either step above, browse to C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Local\Creative Solutions\Accounting CS\CheckedOutFiles and see if there is a copy of the workpaper there. You can change the permissions to this document so it is not marked as "Read-only". Note that the AppData folder is a hidden folder by default.

  1. Close the application on your workstation.
  2. Right-click on the icon on your desktop and select Properties.
  3. On the Compatibility tab, verify that the Run this program as an administrator checkbox is unmarked.

If UAC (User Account Control) is turned off, Windows automatically elevates the permissions for all apps, which means Workpapers CS is being run as an administrator without the option being selected in the steps above.

Also verify the program executable is not being run as the administrator.

  1. Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Creative Solutions\Accounting CS or C:\Program Files\Creative Solutions\Accounting CS. The folder at the end of the path will be Workpapers CS if you use the standalone Workpapers CS application.
  2. Right-click the AccountingCS.exe or WorkpapersCS.exe file and select Properties.
  3. On the Compatibility tab, verify that the Run this program as an administrator checkbox is unmarked.
  1. In Microsoft Excel, click the File tab and then Options.
  2. Click the Add-Ins button on the left side.
  3. In the Manage drop-down menu, choose Excel Add-ins and then click Go...
  4. Verify that the checkbox is marked for the Cs.Accounting.Excel.Automation item.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Repeat steps 1 and 2.
  7. In the Manage drop-down menu, choose COM Add-ins and then click Go...
  8. Verify that the checkbox is marked for the CS.Accounting.OfficeIntegration.ExcelVstoAddin item.
  9. Click OK.

If you do not see the CS.Accounting.Excel.Automation or CS.Accounting.OfficeIntegration.ExcelVstoAddin items, you may need to choose Disabled Items from the Manage drop-down menu. In the dialog, click the item and then click the Enable button.

  1. In Microsoft Excel (or Word), click the File tab and then Options.
  2. Click the Trust Center button on the left side.
  3. Click the Trust Center Settings button on the bottom right.
  4. Click the Trusted Locations button on the left side.
  5. Click the Add new location button.
  6. Click the Browse button and go to C:\Program Files(x86)\Creative Solutions\Workpapers CS or Accounting CS and then click OK.
  7. Mark the Subfolders of this location are also trusted checkbox.
  8. Click OK.

PPC Trusted Location in Word

Third party addins you're not using may be conflicting with the Workpapers CS addin, causing it to become disabled. Use the following steps to disable any addins you don't need.

  1. In Microsoft Word or Excel, choose File > Options.
  2. Choose Addins on the left.
  3. At the bottom of the Addins section, choose "COM Add-ins" in the Manage field and then click Go.
  4. Clear the checkbox for any addins you're not currently using and then click OK.

Note: If you're using PPC Checkpoint Tools, be sure that you do not disable those addins.

  1. On the workstation, go to Control Panel and then choose Programs and Features.
  2. Click on Accounting CS or Workpapers CS and then click on Uninstall.
  3. Browse to the WinCSI folder where you installed the application.
  4. Find the Accounting CS or Workpapers CS folder inside of the WinCSI folder.
  5. Inside the DESKTOP folder, find and double-click the Setup.exe file.

Note: If you do not see improvement after following these steps and your system has Trend Micro installed, you may need to contact Trend Micro for additional assistance.

For VO/SaaS firms: If this is happening for a firm on VO/SaaS, talk to the Web CF on duty and ask them to reset the user's profile.

With the 2015.3.0 update for ACS/WPCS, certain Microsoft components were updated and may cause a conflict with Microsoft Office 2010 and earlier. Install the updated Microsoft Visual Studio Tool, and then close and reopen Microsoft Word or Excel to resolve the addin not loading.

To look for and fix potential addin conflicts:

Thomson Reuters recommends consulting a qualified IT professional before making changes to the registry as problems with the registry can cause serious problems with the operating system. It is also recommended that you backup the registry before making changes to it.

  1. Open the Start menu and then type "regedit" in the search to open the Registry Editor.
  2. Browse to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins
  3. Click on the first item in the Addins folder.
  4. Double-click LoadBehavior and then change the ValueData to 1 and click OK.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 for the following locations as well. Note that if the first item does not have the LoadBehavior item, move down to the next item.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Software\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins
  6. Close the Registry Editor and reboot your computer.

Note: The following folders in the Registry Editor should remain at a LoadBehavior value 3.

  • PPCExcel12
  • PPCExcel12Repurpose
  • PPCMenu.dsrPPCMenuExcel
  • PPCOBPA.ExcelConnect
  • PPCSecurity.PPCSecurityDsr
  • CS.Accounting.OfficeIntegration.ExcelVstoAddin
  • CS.Accounting.OfficeIntegration.WordVstoAddin
  • WordEEFonts.Connect
  • AdvanceFlow.ExcelAddIn
  • cab_addin.Connect

Error message: Unable to cast COM object of type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.ApplicationClass; to interface type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel._Application'. This operation failed because the QueryInterface call on the COM component for the interface with IID '{000208D5-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}' failed due to the following error: Library not registered. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8002801D (TYPE_E_LIBNOTREGISTERED)).

  • To solve this error, delete this registry key (the number at the end will vary depending on which year of Office is installed - you'll want to delete the older version most likely).

Error message: Error: not loaded. A runtime error occurred during loading of the Com add-in.

To solve this error, verify that the add-in is listed in the Registry Editor in the following locations:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins

Next, verify that the load behavior for the add-in is set to 3 in both locations. If the add-in cannot be found in the Registry Editor, uninstall and re-install Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime, reboot the workstation, and rerun the Desktop Setup.

Nothing happens when you try to open a document (the status changes to Checked Out but Excel/Word never opens): Check Programs and Features in the Control Panel to see if there are remnants of an earlier version of Microsoft Office. Uninstall, reboot, and then you may get a Workpapers error that says "The system cannot find the file specified." If you see this, open Excel or Word and Windows should automatically launch an installer that will do some configurations. You'll then be able to open documents from the Workpapers Dashboard.

Reset Excel settings

A step that has been reported to work, but should be tried as a last resort is to reset the Excel settings by following the steps below:

  1. Open the Start menu and then type "regedit" in the search to open the Registry Editor.
  2. Browse to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\
  3. Rename the folder that corresponds to the version of Excel, for example rename 15.0 to 15.0.old.
  4. Open Excel outside of Workpapers CS, then within Workpapers CS.

Trend Micro steps

These steps (which were provided by Trend Micro support) fall outside the scope of Support and should only be provided to customers as a last resort.

  1. Confirm Agent Version for reference (should be at least 6.6.2412/14.1.1150)
  2. Back up the CPMCONFIG.INI file in %ProgramFiles%\Trend Micro\Client Security Agent\Hosted Agent\CPM folder.
  3. Back up the OFCSCAN.INI file in %ProgramFiles%\Trend Micro\Client Security Agent
  4. Unload Agent > Monitor in Services.msc if stopped.
  5. Download and apply the fix SEG_66_Excel_AvoidExcelSaveIssue from box.
  6. Restart the computer.
  7. Check if the files below have the AvoidExcelSaveIssue=0:
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Trend Micro\Client Server Security Agent\HostedAgent\CPM\CpmConfig.ini [Global Setting]
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Trend Micro\Client Server Security Agent\Ofcscan.ini [Global Setting]
  8. Verify if the issue persists.

Review ADO 1787136, Workpapers CS automation add-in stays inactive

If the Workpapers CS automation add-in stays inactive and you have done everything else in the article above, have their tech look at the User Account Control (UAC) setting for Accounting CS or Workpapers CS. If it is Off (all the way at the bottom) or a lower setting, have them move it up “one notch” and restart the machine and try again.
