Cannot edit or add PDF files via Adobe Acrobat add-in

Scenario

AdvanceFlow users with appropriate permissions can add PDF files from Acrobat or edit PDF files that are stored in AdvanceFlow via the GoFileRoom Acrobat Add-In. Occasionally, these functions or buttons may be grayed out, missing, or inoperable.

Causes

On workstations where the GoFileRoom add-in is installed, these issues may be caused by any of the following.

Resolutions

Try the procedures below in the order they are listed to resolve the issue. Attempt to add a PDF file to AdvanceFlow or edit a PDF file from AdvanceFlow after each procedure. After the issue is resolved, there is no need to continue with the other items in the list.

Complete the GoFileRoom setup checklist

Complete the three steps in the Workstation setup section of the AdvanceFlow setup checklist .

Verify that only one supported version of Acrobat is installed

  1. Open the Windows Control Panel and then choose Programs and Features.
  2. Verify that the Adobe Acrobat version installed on your workstation meets the AdvanceFlow System Requirements .
  3. Uninstall Adobe Reader or any other third-party PDF reader or editor applications that are also present.

Install the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 4

Reinstall the GoFileRoom Adobe Acrobat Add-In

  1. Close Adobe Acrobat.
  2. Browse to the following location based on your computer's operating system.
    • 64-bit Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\GoFileRoom\GFRAcrobat\Distribution
    • 32-bit Windows: C:\Program Files\GoFileRoom\GFRAcrobat\Distribution
  3. Double-click the GFRAcrobatInstaller.exe file.
  4. The Windows wait cursor will appear for a few seconds.

    Note: There is no other indication that the add-in is installing. After the Windows wait cursor disappears, the installation is complete.

Uninstall and reinstall the GoFileRoom Client Add-In

Uninstall and reinstall the GoFileRoom Client Add-In.

Verify that the gfrPDFModify.PDF add-on is enabled in Internet Explorer

  1. In Internet Explorer, choose Tools > Internet Options, and click the Programs tab.
  2. Click the Manage Add-ons button.
  3. In the Show field, select All add-ons from the drop-down list.
  4. Scroll to the THOMSON REUTERS (TAX & ACCOUNTING) INC. section, and verify that gfrPDFModify.PDF is present and enabled.
  5. Click Close and then OK.

Manually copy and paste the GoFileRoom add-in files into the Acrobat program directory

  1. Close Adobe Acrobat, if it's open.
  2. Browse to the following location based on your computer's operating system.
    • 64-bit Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\GoFileRoom\GFRAcrobat\Distribution\plug_ins
    • 32-bit Windows: C:\Program Files\GoFileRoom\GFRAcrobat\Distribution\plug_ins
  3. Copy the gfrAddin.api, gfrCabinet.api, gfrScanMacro.api, and gfrTaxTools.api files.
  4. Browse to the following location based on your computer's operating system.
    • 64-bit Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat <version>\Acrobat\plug_ins
    • 32-bit Windows: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat <version>\Acrobat\plug_ins
  5. Paste the .api files files you copied during step 3 into this location.

Check Adobe Acrobat Certified Mode settings

  1. Open Adobe Acrobat.
  2. Choose Edit > Preferences and click General in the Categories list.
  3. Clear the Use only certified plug-ins checkbox.
  4. Verify that the Currently in Certified Mode label is set to No.
  5. Click OK.

    Note: If Acrobat remains in Certified Mode, even after several attempts to clear the checkbox, you may need to repair, update, or even completely uninstall and reinstall Adobe Acrobat to correct this.

Test a different Windows profile

If none of the solutions above resolve the issue, log in to the workstation using a different Windows profile, and then attempt to add or edit a PDF in GoFileRoom.
