If you are running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 and receive the message "Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP1 is required" when trying to install, take the following steps.

  1. Download and save the executable file for the installation to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on the executable file and choose Properties.
  3. In the General tab, if it exists, click the Unblock button next to Security: This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer.
  4. Click the Compatibility tab.
  5. Unmark Run this program in compatibility mode. If this option is grayed out, click the Change settings for all users button and unmark the option on the next window that opens.
  6. Click OK to close the Properties.
  7. Right-click the executable file and choose Run as administrator.

Internal notes

If changing the properties of the download and running as administrator don't help, the firm's IT professional will need to check the registry. You can provide the registry key, but do not walk a user through these steps.

  1. Access the Start menu.
  2. Enter regedit in the Search programs and files box and hit Enter on your keyboard.
  3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers.
  4. Remove the entry for the program you are having issues installing. There may be some machines where the registry key will be found under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers.
  5. Close the Registry Editor.
  6. Re-run the installation as administrator.
