Follow the steps in this guide to ensure that the FileCabinet CS installation is successful and to help prevent future issues operating the program.

Update license PIN

As of November 2017, your license PIN can no longer match your firm's ZIP code. If you have not changed your PIN from your ZIP code, or if you are not sure what your license PIN is, see Managing your license PIN for instructions on how to change your license PIN. You will not be able to install your FileCabinet CS license if you do not update your license PIN from your ZIP code, or if you enter a PIN other than the one from your My Account page.

Downloading the installer

The installer is available on the CS Professional Suite download page. You'll need to sign in to your CS Web account to access to the download. After signing in, complete the following steps.

  1. Click the link to download FileCabinet CS.
  2. Click the Proceed to Download link.
  3. Click the Download Now button.

If you are given the option to Run or Save the download, choose Save. If you attempt to run the installation file rather than saving it, the program will not install properly and you may have issues moving forward.

Preparing to install

Before installing, complete the following items to increase the likelihood of a successful install:

Consult an IT Professional before making changes to the User Account Control. If changes are made to the User Account Control settings, a reboot is required for them to properly take effect. For more information on how to configure your antivirus software, see Antivirus guidelines for CS Professional Suite applications.

Do not temporarily disable your antivirus as an alternative to setting the recommended exceptions. Many antivirus programs continue to run after being disabled, which means that installation issues can occur. If you do have success installing with a disabled antivirus, re-enabling the antivirus could cause issues updating the program, as well as slowness operating the program and data loss.

For more information on how to configure your firewall, see Firewall guidelines for CS Professional Suite applications.

Do not temporarily disable your firewall as an alternative to setting the recommended exceptions. Many firewalls continue to run after being disabled, which means that installation issues can occur. If you do have success installing with a disabled firewall, re-enabling the antivirus could cause issues updating the program, as well as CS Connect errors and slowness.

Close applications

Before installing FileCabinet CS, all CS Professional Suite applications and Microsoft Office applications (including Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) must be closed. For network installations, these applications must be closed on every workstation across the network. To ensure that all processes associated with those applications have ended on all machines, it is recommended that you take the following steps:

  1. It is preferred that you reboot the server. If you cannot reboot at this time and want to continue with the installation, try the steps below. Note that if the installation is not successful, you may be required to reboot later.
  2. Go to the server and open Administrative Tools, then click Computer Management.
  3. From the left-hand panel, choose System Tools > Share Folders > Open Files.
  4. Close any files in the WinCSI folder or files referencing Microsoft Office programs.

Running the installer

Complete the following steps to run the installation file:

  1. Navigate to the folder where the file was downloaded.

With Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox open, press CTRL+J on your keyboard to open the download history.

  2. Find the downloaded file fcsdownload.exe.
  3. Right-click the file and choose Properties.
  4. Click the Compatibility tab.
  5. Uncheck Run this program in compatibility mode and click  OK. If the option is grayed out, click the Change settings for all users button and then uncheck Run this program in compatibility mode
  6. Right-click the download file again and choose Run as Administrator.
  7. If prompted to allow the program to make changes to this computer, click Yes.

Installation options

When the installation begins, wait for the files to extract. Then, click Next to begin the installation. You must read and accept the license agreement to proceed with the installation. After agreeing to the license agreement, you will be taken to the Product Selection dialog with the following options:

After making your selections, click the Next button. The rest of the installation process is automatic. If the installation is successful, you will receive this message: "Setup is complete. You may run the product by selecting the program icon in the CS Professional Suite folder in the Programs menu." Click the OK button to complete the installation.

Installation issues

If you receive the message "Setup has detected that you are attempting to install to a computer with an unsupported operating system listed below", take the following steps.

  1. Find the downloaded file fcsdownload.exe.
  2. Right-click the file and choose Properties.
  3. Click the Compatibility tab.
  4. Uncheck Run this program in compatibility mode and click  OK. If the option is grayed out, click the Change settings for all users button and then uncheck Run this program in compatibility mode
  5. Right-click the download file again and choose Run as Administrator.
  6. If prompted to allow the program to make changes to this computer, click Yes.

If you receive this error, right-click the fcsdownload.exe and choose Run as administrator. If you still receive this error, consult your firm's IT professional to help disabling the Windows User Account Control and verifying that permissions are set according to Permissions guidelines for the CS Professional Suite.

An "Access denied" error indicates that either the file is in use or the user running the installation does not have the necessary permissions to access the file. To resolve this error, complete the following steps.

  1. Verify that all CS Professional Suite applications and all Microsoft Office applications are closed. If this is a network installation, these applications must be closed across all machines on the network.
  2. Once all applications are closed, try the installation again. If you receive the access denied error again, take the following steps to close open files.
    1. Go to the server and open Administrative Tools, then click Computer Management.
    2. From the left-hand panel, choose System Tools > Share Folders > Open Files.
    3. Close any files in the WinCSI folder or files referencing Microsoft Office programs.
  3. Try the installation again. If you still receive the access denied error, reboot the server. This will ensure that all files and processes associated with CS Professional Suite applications and Microsoft office applications are closed.
  4. If the server has been rebooted and you still receive an access denied error, log in with an admin-level user account and try the installation again. If you are already logged in with an admin account, verify that the recommended permissions have been set according to Permissions guidelines for the CS Professional Suite.

The license process is automatic, but if it fails, see the "Installation issues" section above. After downloading and installing the licenses, FileCabinet CS will restart. Once the program is open again, choose File > CS Connect, mark Retrieve available updates and click Call now to check for and install updates.

SQL installation

If you use the SQL database format for your data and have a fresh installation or are unable to see your SQL data location when inside FileCabinet CS, you will need to run the SQL setup. See Installing FileCabinet CS on a SQL Server for instructions.

Desktop installation

For network installations of FileCabinet CS, you can run the desktop setup on each workstation by following the instructions in FileCabinet CS: Desktop setup installation.

With the 2017 release of FileCabinet CS, you will need to run the Desktop setup and install the FileCabinet CS Print Driver to overcome potential issues derived from Windows updates interfering with it's functionality.
