If a workstation continues to prompt that a desktop setup (or workstation setup) needs to be performed, try each of the following to resolve the issue. After each step attempt to open the program, if it prompts for the desktop setup again proceed to the next step. 

Run the desktop setup as administrator

  1. Navigate to X:\WinCSI\UTYY\Desktop, where X is the drive letter where the program is installed and YY represents the year of UltraTax CS.

    For Fixed Assets CS, the path will be X:\WinCSI\DSW\Desktop.

    For FileCabinet CS, the path will be X:\WinCSI\Cabinet\Desktop.

  2. Right-click on the Setup.exe file and select Run as Administrator.

Rename the Prereqchk.dll file within the Desktop folder

  1. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to X:\WinCSI\UTYY\Desktop, where X is the drive letter where the program is installed and YY represents the year of UltraTax CS.

    For Fixed Assets CS, the path will be X:\WinCSI\DSW\Desktop.

    For FileCabinet CS, the path will be X:\WinCSI\Cabinet\Desktop.

  2. Rename the Prereqchk.dll file to Prereqchk.dll.old.

Uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Visual C++

  1. Open the Control Panel. For instructions on how to do this, see Where is Control Panel? External link (What's this?)

  2. Uninstall all applicable versions of Microsoft Visual C++ for that year of UltraTax CS. See .NET Framework and Visual C++ Considerations for CS Professional Suite for more information.
  3. Navigate to X:\WinCSI\UTYY\Desktop\vcredist_x86\YYYY, where X is the drive letter where the program is installed, YY represents the year of UltraTax CS, and YYYY represents the year of C++. 

    For Fixed Assets CS, the path will be X:\WinCSI\DSW\Desktop\vcredist_x86\YYYY.

    For FileCabinet CS, the path will be X:\WinCSI\Cabinet\Desktop\vcredist_x86\YYYY.

  4. Double-click on the vcredist_x86.exe file and click the Install button.
  5. Once the install is complete, navigate to the other YYYY folder (if applicable) in the vcredist_x86 folder and install that version of C++ as well. 

Update Microsoft Windows OS

If you have completed the steps above as a measure to overcome general desktop installation issues, please complete the following steps next to see if you are now able to open the program:

  1. Browse to WinCSI and open the platform folder for the product you are working with.
  2. Look for the application's exe file. UtwYY.exe, where YY equals year of program, dsw.exe or fcab.exe
  3. Double click the exe.
  4. If the program opens now, right click the exe file, Send to>Desktop and you will end up with an icon on the desktop.
