Embedded objects overview

An embedded object differs from static items that you can store, but not edit, in DT FileCabinet. When an object is embedded in DT FileCabinet, you can edit that object in the source application, or from within DT FileCabinet using many of the features of the object's source application.

For example, when you double-click a Microsoft Word document as an embedded object in DT FileCabinet, it opens for editing in Microsoft Word.

Alternatively, you can choose Setup > User Preferences, click the Misc tab, and clear the Open embedded Microsoft Office documents in a separate window checkbox to make Microsoft Office objects available for editing in the Watch window. The Microsoft Word menus and toolbars are available in the Watch window, in addition to other DT FileCabinet menu commands. You can make changes to the document, and then click in the Folders window to save the changes. To save your changes in the embedded object in DT FileCabinet, choose File > Close Object.

Notes

  • When viewing embedded PDF files in DT FileCabinet, the command menus do not change to those of the source application, though the Adobe Reader toolbar is available. Open the document in Adobe Acrobat and/or Reader to access all the menus.
  • If you edit an embedded Outlook email message, it opens in Outlook, allowing you to send the email message to a recipient after making your changes
  • If you embed an existing file from your local drive or network, changes that you make to the embedded object do not affect the original file.
