The CS Professional Suite of applications integrates with several Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word. This topic lists the supported versions of Microsoft Office and includes some general recommendations for CS Professional Suite integration.

Supported versions of Microsoft Office

See the tables below for the supported versions of Microsoft Office that integrate with the CS Professional Suite.


Your firm may consider upgrading your version of Microsoft Office. Most accounting firms use a variety of software from different vendors, so you should consider how any changes in your environment may impact other software in your office. We recommend that you consult a qualified IT professional before you make decisions about purchasing and deploying a different version of Microsoft Office.

Only one year of the Microsoft Office Suite should be installed at a time. If Microsoft Office is upgraded, remove the prior version before installing the new. Failure to do so may inhibit proper function of Microsoft Office products and/or their integration features.

Note: Microsoft offers a 64-bit edition of Office (in addition to the standard 32-bit edition) as of the 2010 version.  However, the 32-bit version of Microsoft Office is the  only version supported for CS Professional Suite applications. Microsoft universally recommends the 32-bit version over the 64-bit Office whenever possible, due to known compatibility issues with third-party add-ins.

Office 365

Office 365 is Microsoft's cloud-based platform that enables you to run Office applications via the web. However, if you run Office 365 via the web, locally-installed CS Professional Suite applications are unable to communicate and integrate with the online Office applications.

The following table lists the versions of Office 365 that can be installed locally. This is currently the only option that enables integration and data sharing between Office 365 and CS Professional Suite applications.

Considerations for integration between Office and CS Professional Suite

The following is a list of general recommendations to ensure smooth integration between Microsoft Office and CS Professional Suite applications.

Virtual Office and Software as a Service Users

For Virtual Office and Software as a Service (SaaS) users, please be aware that locally-installed Microsoft Office does not integrate with CS Professional Suite applications running through Virtual Office and SaaS. To utilize the integration, you must run Microsoft Office through Virtual Office and SaaS as well, which offers Microsoft Office 2016. However, Microsoft Office documents that are saved locally may be opened or exported to Virtual Office and SaaS.

Run as Administrator

We recommend that you run both the CS Professional Suite applications and the Microsoft Office applications as an administrator. Running both applications at the same privilege level will enable the CS Professional Suite and Microsoft Office applications to communicate with one another and will help ensure that data and functionality are shared effectively. Running CS applications as an administrator is one of the best practices for the CS Professional Suite as well; see Permissions Guidelines for CS Professional Suite for details.


CS Professional Suite applications can send email messages via your default email application, as defined by your Windows operating system. To integrate with the CS Professional Suite, your default email application must be MAPI-compliant (Messaging Application Programming Interface). Microsoft Outlook is the most common example of a MAPI-compliant email application.


  • Simple MAPI email clients (such as Outlook Express or Windows Mail) are no longer supported on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 or higher.
  • Since the email application, not the CS Professional Suite applications, ultimately delivers the email, you may need to open your email application and keep the application running to send emails generated from CS Professional Suite applications.
  • To see if your email application is compatible with CS Professional Suite applications, see Determining MAPI-Compliant Email Client for CS Professional Suite.
  • Any restrictions on attachment file size or other policies applicable to sent mail in your environment may interfere with the ability of CS Professional Suite applications to send email via the email application.


Several CS Professional Suite applications let you to export and import spreadsheets to and from Microsoft Excel. Depending on the application or the action, there may be specific requirements or formats for the import or export functionality to work properly.


Third-party add-ins for Microsoft Office applications may interfere with CS Professional Suite add-ins for Microsoft Office or with the CS Professional Suite application itself. To determine if an add-in conflict exists, try running Microsoft Office in safe mode with all non-Thomson-Reuters add-ins disabled. Hidden data and personal information in Office documents: The presence of hidden data and personal information within Office documents may cause irregular behavior when integrating with CS Professional Suite applications. Internet Explorer

CS Professional Suite and Microsoft Office applications will use Internet Explorer for common tasks. The version, active add-ins, and settings of Internet Explorer may affect the functionality, behavior, and integration of those applications. If you suspect that Internet Explorer may be affecting integration issues, please consult your qualified IT professional to troubleshoot Internet Explorer.
