The UltraTax CS Bar Code Scan utility enables you to scan bar codes on W-2s and Schedules K-1 (for 1120S, 1065, and 1041 entities) that your clients submit for the preparation of their tax returns. Once the documents are scanned, you can accept the data into your UltraTax CS client data files via data sharing.

If you are running UltraTax CS through Virtual Office CS or SaaS, this topic explains how to install the UltraTax CS Bar Code Scan utility. Your bar code scanner must have a serial connection (standard RS-232) or USB connection to your computer and be able to decode two-dimensional (2D) bar codes in PDF-417 format to work with this utility.

Notes

  • You can open applications through Virtual Office CS or SaaS by clicking the Applications link in the navigation pane. If you don’t see this link, you don’t have access to applications through Virtual Office CS or SaaS.
  • Bar code scanners might not be configured to decode PDF-417 bar codes by default. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for configuring the bar code scanner.
