Credit for taxes paid to other states

Show expandable text

You can calculate the credit for taxes paid to other states in a plan for any of the following resident states, for up to two nonresident states attached to the plan. To calculate this credit, begin in the resident state and choose Credits > Other State Tax Cr. Then, select a nonresident state from either or both of the Nonresident state drop-down lists. The income subject to tax and the amount of tax from the nonresident state will automatically copy to the resident state, and the credit will calculate in the applicable fields.

Notes

  • Some states have a different name for the Other State Tax Cr tab. For example, the name of this tab for Rhode Island is Other State Tax.
  • Some states have two of these tabs. Arizona, Delaware, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, and Montana have a taxpayer (TP) tab and spouse (SP) tab. New Jersey has a Tax Pd Other States tab and Local Taxes Paid tab. Massachusetts and Pennsylvania have Out of State 1 and Out of State 2 tabs.
  • If the nonresident state is not attached to the plan, you can manually enter the income subject to tax and the amount of tax from the nonresident state, and the credit will calculate in the applicable fields.
