Question

How does UltraTax CS calculate dependent exemptions for 1040NR?

Answer

The U.S. Tax Guide for Aliens (IRS Publication 519) details which nonresident aliens are allowed to claim exemptions for dependents. Students and business apprentices from India may be able to claim exemptions for dependents. UltraTax CS is designed to accommodate such situations and interprets dependent information entered as qualifying for the dependent exemption. If the taxpayer does not qualify for any dependent exemption, do not enter dependent information in the Dependents statement dialog in Screen 1040. To report dependents without taking any exemptions, use the Exemption amount (Force) field in Screen NRA. Please note that using the force field does not change the total number of exemptions reported on 1040NR, Page 1.
