To learn how to address specific California electronic filing schema failure errors, click a schema failure error in the following table. Note that there may be more than one reason that a specific schema failure error generates.

Schema failure error Potential message
3506 Schema errors, return xxxxxxxxx/CA/1040/2012 The ZIPCode element is invalid - The value '98765777' is invalid according to its datatype 'http://www.irs.gov/efile:ZIPCodeType' - The Pattern constraint failed. The ZIPCode element is invalid - The value '98765777' is invalid according to its datatype 'http://www.irs.gov/efile:ZIPCodeType' - The Pattern constraint failed.

Description

For some reason, the schema failure error description does not correlate this to Form 3506. The problem is with the Form 3506 credit for "Day Care - Provider Zip code." If you enter this information as nine digits with a hyphen (federal Screen Cr or Screen CACr), UltraTax/1040-CA transfers just the first eight digits for the electronic record, which causes a rejection by the California Franchise Tax Board (FTB).

UltraTax/1040-CA, version 12.3.0 will automatically correct this error.

Resolution: Enter just five-digit ZIP code, or enter the nine-digit ZIP code without a hyphen.

3506 Schema errors, return xxxxxxxxx/CA/1040/2012 The value of the TaxExempt element does not equal its fixed value.

Description

Form 3506 credit for Day Care - If Provider is a "Person," the provider must have a valid Social Security number. If the provider is an "Organization," the provider must have valid Employer Identification Number (EIN) or must be designated as "Tax Exempt" pursuant to data entry in federal Screen Cr or Screen CACr.

We expanded an error code in UltraTax/1040-CA, version 12.2.2 to cover this error.

Resolution: Enter the provider's Social Security number if the provider is an individual, or enter the provider's EIN if the provider is an organization / business.

3800 The ExemptionsClaimed element is invalid - The value '0' is invalid according to its datatype CA-3DigitType - The Pattern constraint failed.;;

Description

The text in this schema failure error does not identify the applicable form. CA Form 3800 requires critical information about the parents' return, including the number of exemptions claimed on the parent's return. If the parents claimed zero (0) exemptions, then in theory Form 3800 would not be applicable to the child's return. The parents probably claimed the child if the child is including Form 3800 in their (the child's) tax return.

Resolution: We hope to work with the California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) to improve the filing of CA Form 3800 in the future, In the meantime, see the ELF Critical diagnostic message in UltraTax/1040-CA about proper data entry for CA Form 3800, which is the California equivalent of federal Form 8615, where the child's investment income is taxed at the parents' rate.

3805P Form 3805P Schema Failure - Missing data… "EarlyDistributions::IncludedInIncome"

Description

If Form 3805P, line 4 has a value, then line 1 (Early Distributions Included in Income) must have a value. "0" is considered a value, but Blank is not considered a value. You may see "0" on line 4 when line 1 is blank.

UltraTax/1040-CA, version 12.3.1 will display a zero (0) instead of blank on Form 3805P, line 1 to allow you to create the electronic file.

Resolution: Choose Edit > Overrides > Display Zero on the appropriate line (as suggested by the error description\; line 1 in this example) for the appropriate unit (Tp unit or Sp unit) of Form 3805P.

3805V PriorYrNOLs' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile' has invalid child element 'NOLType' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile'. List of possible elements expected: 'EntityID, DisasterTitle, SICAgriculturalCode' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile'.

Description

If Form 3805V, Page 3, Part III shows an NOL of Type 1, 3, or 4, you must enter the corresponding Disaster Code (for Type 1 NOL) or Business Code (for Type 3 or 4 NOL).

We anticipate implementing an electronic filing diagnostic message for missing codes on Form 3805V with UltraTax/1040-CA, version 12.3.2.

Resolution: In Screen CACO, enter the proper codes in the statement dialog for the Net operating loss carryover from prior years and allocation of current year loss - return tax field or the statement dialog for the Net operating loss carryover from prior years and allocation of current year loss - AMT field. Once entered, the codes proforma from year to year.

3885A CAForm3885A::Amortization: Amortization Table: RAndTCSection

Description

Form 3885A, Part IV, line 9(d) is missing the applicable IRC Code section.

Resolution: In the Asset Module, for the given Asset being amortized, click the Other tab and enter the data in the Amortization section. Verify that you have a CA column in the Depreciation tab in the Asset Module. If you do not use the Asset Module, enter data in Screen CADepr for the activity in the applicable California Business, Rental, Farm, or FarmRental folder. Enter the Code Section in the statement dialog for the Amortization: Established in current year field.

540 Schema errors, return xxxxxxxxx/CA/1040/2012 The AccountNumber element is invalid - The value '2233 44556' is invalid according to its datatype 'http://www.irs.gov/efile:BankAccountNumberType' - The Pattern constraint failed.

Description

UltraTax/1040-CA issues an ELF Critical diagnostic message for this schema failure, but does not prevent creation of the electronic file.

UltraTax/1040-CA, version 12.3.0 and later will automatically remove "offending" characters (including spaces) from the electronic filing record.

Resolution: Remove spaces from the bank account number entered in Screen CABank or in federal Screen Bank.

540NR /connect/elf/svcctr/ca/incoming, Schema errors, return xxxxxxxxx/CA/1040/2012 'NCNRTax' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile' has incomplete content. List of possible elements expected: 'LLCInformation' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile'.

Description

Form 540NR, line 82 reflects payments made by a limited liability company (LLC) on the taxpayer's behalf. A total amount has probably been entered in the LLC payments made for members field in Screen CAExt, rather than in the statement dialog for that field. Note that Form 540NR displays additional text "LLC" per state instructions regardless of whether you use the field or the statement dialog. FEIN and Name of LLC are required data entry if you electronically file Form 540NR.

Resolution: Enter the FEIN, Name of LLC, and Amount in the statement dialog for the LLC payments made for members field in Screen CAExt.

593 E-file Error Checker -- Schema Failure Error CAForm 593: SellerTransferor: CAProperty:Address (City, State, ZIP Code)

Description

There must be a comma between the city and state, and the two-letter postal code must be entered for the state.

Resolution: Include a comma between the city and state and enter the state's two-letter postal code in the Property city, state, zip code field in Screen CA593. For example: enter Anaheim, CA 92801.

Federal Attachment Rejected;Your Federal return does not match the latest published IRS Schema or is not well formed. (value File Name: submission.xml. Line Number: xxx. Position: xx. Reason...The Pattern constraint failed., rule X0000-020)

Description

Even if the federal Form 1040 is not electronically filed, the 1040-CA electronic record includes a copy of the federal return. The California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) validates both the federal portion and the California portion of the electronic record. So, you must clear all federal schema errors (including PIN information) before you electronically file the CA Form 540/540NR return. UltraTax/1040-CA issues an FYI diagnostic message about this error.

Resolution: For resolution information, see 1040-CA ELF: Federal attachment - e-file rejections and 1040-CA ELF: Federal attachment overview

Header ThirdPartyDesignee::Name:FirstName

Description

One word names, such as "Preparer," "Madonna," or "J.Crew" (without a space to separate the initial and the last name), are not acceptable; this type of entry will transfer to the Designee Last Name field, which will leave the Designee first name field blank. UltraTax/1040-CA will note this error via the Error Checker. In addition, for UltraTax/1040-CA, version 12.3.1 and later, we will insert the name of the Preparer in the Designee field at the bottom of Form 540, Page 3 if you enter "Preparer" in the Designee name field in federal Screen Contact.

Resolution: Review the bottom of Form 540/540NR, Page 3; the designee name must be two words. In federal Screen Contact in the General folder, the designee name entered in the Designee name field must contain a space if you entered 1 (Yes) in the Authorize discussion … field in federal Screen 1040 or Screen CAGen. Verify that you have entered a first name and a last name, such as "Madonna Ciccone" or "J. Crew" (with a space between the first name/first initial and the last name).

Header Schema errors, return xxxxxxxxx/CA/1040/2012 'SpouseRDPFilingSeparateName' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile' has incomplete content. List of possible elements expected: 'NonResidentAlien, SSN' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile'.

Description

This error generates when the return is Married Filing Separate but is missing the Spouse's Social Security number. UltraTax/1040 issues a diagnostic message and an error code for this schema failure.

Resolution: Enter the spouse' Social Security number in federal Screen 1040.

HOH Questionnaire 'QualifyingPerson' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile' has incomplete content. List of possible elements expected: 'AgeInYears, AgeInMonths' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile'.

Description

The qualifying person's age in years or age in months has not been entered for the return.

We expanded the error code in UltraTax/1040-CA, version 12.2.2 to cover this schema failure.

Resolution: In UltraTax/1040-CA Screen CAHOH in the Electronic Filing folder, verify that you entered the age in years (with no leading zero) in the Age, in years, as of 12/31/12 field or the age in months (for 11 months or less, with no leading zero) in the If less than 1 year old, age in months field.

HOH Questionnaire Schema errors, return xxxxxxxxx/CA/1040/2012 The AgeInYears element is invalid - The value '04' is invalid according to its datatype CA-3DigitType - The Pattern constraint failed.

Description

The age in years entered in UltraTax/1040-CA is not valid.

UltraTax/1040-CA, version 12.3.0 will automatically remove any leading zeroes from the electronic record.

This information transfers automatically from federal Screen 1040 for dependents with state use code 6. If you manually enter data, do not enter a leading zero; for example, enter the age as 4 or 7 or 11 (not as 04, 07, or 011).

Preparer Foreign Address Return xxxxxxxxx/2014/CA1040 Software version=Platform:14.3.0 Fed:14.3.0 State:14.2.3 schema error: /CA-Return/CA-ReturnHeader/PaidPreparerInformation/ForeignAddress/AddressLine1Txt: (value File Name: submission.xml. Line Number: 70. Position: 5. Reason: The element 'ForeignAddress' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile' has invalid child element 'AddressLine1Txt' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile'. You must contact your software provider to resolve this error.

Description

If the UltraTax CS license includes a foreign address for the preparer firm, the CA FTB will reject the return if filed using 2014 UltraTax/1040-CA version 14.3.0 or earlier. Business Rule X0000-010 simply means that the return rejected for a schema error in the California electronic record.

Resolution: Update to UltraTax/1040-CA version 14.3.1 or later. Then, re-create and retransmit the e-file.

Sch CA(540) / Sch CA(540NR) Schema errors, return xxxxxxxxx/CA/1040/2012 'Subtractions' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile' has invalid child element 'EducatorExpense' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile'. List of possible elements expected: 'BusinessExpenses, HealthSavingsAccount, DeductibleSelfEmploymentTax, DomesticProductionActivities, OtherAdjustment, NetAdjustments, Total' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile'.

Description

Returns filed with UltraTax/1040-CA, versions 12.2.0 or 12.2.1 followed California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) electronic file schema version 3.0, which did not recognize Educator Expenses or Tuition and Fees Deduction.

Resolution: Update to the most recent version of UltraTax/1040-CA, which uses updated FTB electronic file schema versions. Then, re-create the electronic record and re-transmit the electronic return.

Sch CA(540NR) ReturnData/CAForm540NRScheduleCA/ResidencyInformation/Primary/NewResidence/DateOfMove: Your State return does not match the latest published FTB Schema or is not well formed. You must contact your software provider to resolve this error.[Not True] (value File Name: submission.xml. Line Number: 162. Position: 6. Reason: The element 'NewResidence' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile' has invalid child element 'DateOfMove' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile'. List of possible elements expected: 'CountryOfResidence, StateofResidence' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile'., rule X0000-010);

Description

When a taxpayer moves to or from California during the tax year, you may report the date on which the taxpayer moved to or from California and the State or Country of Prior / New residence on Schedule CA(540NR), lines 2 and 3. However, this information is not reported correctly in the California electronic record if you create the electronic file using UltraTax/1040-CA, version 13.2.0, 13.2.1, or 13.2.2; doing so leads to a rejection by the California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) for a schema error.

Resolution: UltraTax/1040-CA, version version 13.3.0 will correct this error. WORKAROUND: The California FTB does not require part-year residency information for Schedule CA(540NR), lines 2 or 3. Thus, you can delete part-year resident data entry in Screen CANRPY, which will leave Schedule CA(540NR), lines 2 and 3 blank.

Sch D(540) / Sch D(540NR /connect/elf/svcctr/ca/incoming, .xml:Schema errors, return xxxxxxxxx/CA/1040/2012 'CapitalAsset' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile' has incomplete content. List of possible elements expected: 'Loss, Gain' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile'.

Resolution: UltraTax/1040-CA, version 12.3.1 will correct this error.

List of possible elements expected: 'EmployerUSAddress, EmployerForeignAddress' in namespace 'http://www.ftb.ca.gov/efile'.

Description

We added error checking for this schema failure in UltraTax/1040-CA, version 12.3.0.

Resolution: Enter the employer's address in federal Screen W2.

W2G Schema errors, return xxxxxxxxx/CA/1040/2012 'IRSW2G' in namespace 'http://www.irs.gov/efile' has invalid child element 'PayerEIN' in namespace 'http://www.irs.gov/efile'. List of possible elements expected: 'PayersUSAddress, PayersForeignAddress' in namespace 'http://www.irs.gov/efile'.

We added error checking for this schema failure in UltraTax/1040-CA, version 12.2.2.

Resolution: Enter the payer address in federal Screen W2G.

Note: Many schema errors are caused by overrides on the California forms. Delete overrides by pressing CTRL+D to access the California diagnostics window. If there's an Overrides tab, then there are overrides within the return. If there are overrides on the form documented in the error, you'll need to remove the overrides and revert to the calculated data by placing your cursor in the field containing the override, and choosing Edit > Overrides > Delete Override.
