MFA required for electronic filing

Effective May 3rd, the 2017 version of UltraTax CS requires multi-factor authentication (MFA) to transmit e-files from CS Connect. Find out more.

Error Code F1040-174-03: If Form 1040, checkbox 'CommPropStateRtnInd' is checked, then Form 8958 must be present in the return and Line 1 checkbox "Single" or Line 3 checkbox "Married filing separately" or Line 4 checkbox "Head of Household" must be checked (element 'IndividualReturnFilingStatusCd' must have the value of 1 or 3 or 4).

To resolve this error, data entry is required on Screen ComPSt, in the General folder. This IRS error code maintains that form 8958 is required for married filing separate returns with a community property state (AZ, CA, ID, LA, NM, NV, TX, WA, and WI) entered in the client address on Screen 1040.

Notes:

  • This IRS error code does not consider the situation where the taxpayer lived in a community property state in the tax year, but has since moved in the processing year, and therefore requires an electronically filed Community Property State Allocation Record. For such returns, change the filing status to married filing joint, or file the return on paper with an Allocation Worksheet.  If filing the return on paper, refer to 1040 - US ELF:  Form 8948 - Paper Filing Exceptions.
