03/05/18 1040 MA 2017 Notice 03/05/18 Notice Refund Changed from Direct Deposit to Paper Check
The State of Massachusetts sent the following notice on February 26, 2018: DOR has just released a number of income tax refunds via paper check where direct deposit had been requested on the tax returns. DOR sometimes changes the refund delivery method from direct deposit to paper check as an additional security measure and this action was taken in an effort to honor these early refund requests more quickly. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. For more information, visit hot-topics-for-tax-filing-season.
03/05/18 1065 LA 17.3.0 Notice 03/05/18 Notice Lousiana released new Partnership forms in late February
The state has agreed to continue to accept the old version due to the time of year. It has changed completely from the earlier version. The main form went from 4 pages to 12 pages. There is now a different return that is filed depending on if you have any corporate partners or not. They are also working on schemas to allow ELF for the main return. The idea is that any extended return will be able to file with the new form or electronically. This is all dependent on when the state is ready. We do not anticipate them having it available by the normal return deadline of April 15.
02/23/18 1040 Federal 17.3.1 Notice 03/08/18 Notice Update for Extender Credits and Deductions

The IRS announced in IR-2018-33 that they are now ready to process returns containing three tax benefits of the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 signed into law on February 9, 2018.

UltraTax/1040 update 17.3.3 was released on March 8, 2018, and included the following credit calculations.

  • Form 8844, Empowerment Zone Credit
  • Form 8845, Indian Employment Credit
  • Form 8864, Biodiesel and Renewable Diesel Fuels Credit
  • Form 8900, Qualified Railroad Track Maintenance Credit
  • Form 8908, Energy Efficient Homes Credit
  • Form 8911, Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Credit

UltraTax/1040 update 17.3.2 was released on February 26, 2018, and included the newly revised forms and calculations for these three extender items.

  • Exclusion from gross income of discharge of qualified principal residence indebtedness (often, foreclosure-related debt forgiveness), claimed on Form 982
  • Mortgage insurance premiums treated as qualified residence interest, generally claimed by low- and middle-income filers on Schedule A
  • Deduction for qualified tuition and related expenses claimed on Form 8917

The IRS has issued a draft Form 5695, Residential Energy Credit that includes bringing back extended credits on pages 1 and 2. Calculation of these credits is available on UltraTax/1040 update 17.3.2

The IRS is continuing to update its systems to handle returns claiming the other tax benefits extended by the new law. The IRS recommends that taxpayers eligible for these benefits avoid delays or possibly needing to file an amended return later, by filing after IRS systems have been updated to reflect these changes. Visit IRS.gov/Extenders for updates on extender provisions.

02/15/18 1040 Federal 17.3.1 Notice 02/15/18 Notice Disaster Tax Relief Airport and Airway Extension (DTRAAE) Act of 2017

UltraTax/1040-US update 17.3.1 includes new field Attributable to a federally declared disaster on Screen 4684P in the Itemized deduction folder for taxpayers who fall under the DTRAAE Act.

Forms 8915A and 8915B have not been released by the IRS as of this update. 02/14/18 1040 MN 17.3.0 Verified 02/14/18 N/A E-File error: Missing data in tag SchM1SLC FAGILess10000Amt

An AGI threshold of $10,400 is in effect for all MN returns. When that is the case there is $0 due, and 100% of tax is refunded. There is a field to indicate this on the MNGen screen. Select code 1.

Furthermore, the Student Loan Credit is a non-refundable credit with no carryover. So there is no net effect on the tax return. Therefore, remove SLC information on the MNCr-4 screen on taxpayers below $10,400. This will satisfy the conditions of the E-File error. Development is working on diagnostics to aid with these errors.

02/09/18 All Efiling N/A Notice 02/09/18 Notice E-File status of 'HOLD'
You may see multiple variations of this 'HOLD' status. Do not be concerned. Also, DO NOT discuss the text of the message with the customer. Explain to the caller that they may see a slight delay in E-File processing compared to previous years. However, E-Files will still be released in a timely manner.

02/08/18 All Platform 2017 Notice 02/08/18 Notice Forms Approval Status

There are still several forms and/or publications that have yet to be approved by the IRS or state taxing agencies. Therefore, some forms will still show as a prior year and/or watermarks may print. The taxing agency decides when they approve each tax program's forms and do not provide a timeframe for their approval to software developers.

Diagnostics will trigger for forms that are still pending approval. Additionally, you can review the Home Page > Product Information to review each entity's Form status. Please check out this Help & How-To Center topic to better understand the meaning of each status and whether or not you can e-file.

02/08/18 1065 Federal 2017 Verified 02/08/18 N/A Screen SepK Doubling/Tripling/etc. - Information Gathering

When a client calls in because they have too many SepK screens, please create a NEW TFS with the client posted to \\pssg.local\userservices\TFS\cstaxsupport\[TFS#] and in the TFS answer to the questions below.

This issue is as follows:

  • K-1s doubling amounts for items allocated to partners on SepK such as guaranteed payments, AMT adjustments, etc.
  • Super slow printing or opening PDE or going to Asset tab as compared to the size of the client. (ex. clients with hundreds of partners are inherently going to be slow – think more of client with 3 partners and 4 rentals and it is slow).

First verify that user doesn’t have bad data entry (this is the more likely cause of doubling) – ex. GPs entered on Page 1 but allocated on Sch K SepK. [when they should be allocated on the Page 1 SepK]

If data entry looks good, preview input screens and see if there are too many SepK screens.

  • SepK for Sch K should always exist. And always only one unit.
  • SepK for Page 1, Rent, Farm, and 4835 should only exist one per unit and only if the activity itself exists.

IMPORTANT! If there are indeed extra SepK screens (ex. two with Page 1 unit 1 or a unit number in excess of actual SepK units), please ask the user some basic questions about their client:

  1. Is this a new client or proforma’d or converted? If converted, did they restore into UT16 first or proforma from converted data backup?
  2. Have they had to force close UT while the client was open?
  3. Are there assets in the client?
    • If yes, do they own the Fixed Asset program?
      • Did they enter the assets in UltraTax CS or Fixed Assets?
      • Where do the assets live? (exs. Page 1, Sch K, etc.)
    • Have they copied and pasted assets between activities?
      • From where to where? (exs. Page 1 to Rent or Unassigned to Page 1)
    • Have they used the reassign assets feature?
      • From where to where? (exs. Page 1 to Rent or Unassigned to Page 1)
    • Do they have any specially allocated assets?
      • Did they allocate the assets in the asset tab or in PDE?
    • Is there an amount in a greyed field for AMT items on any SepK? Which unit?
  4. Do they recall seeing any Orphan folders when they opened the client in UT?
  5. Have they accepted data IN via data share?
    • If yes, what data did they share IN? (Ex. ptrshp name, ptrs in PDE, etc.)
    • What application did it import from (Practice, CSA, another UT client, etc.)
  6. General idea of some data entry they’ve done?
    • Do they hit F8 to review prior data?
    • Have they deleted screen data on any screens?
      • If yes, which screens?
    • Did they enter data somewhere and then remove/copy it somewhere else?
    • Did they use the Reassign input screens feature?
    • Did they use the Reassign clients feature?
    • Do they allocate items on the i/s Ptr Alloc or in PDE?

11/28/17 All Platform N/A Notice 11/28/17 N/A Firm Delegate and license PIN

For security reasons only a firm's licensee has access to make changes to the firm's phone number, address, name or license PIN. The firm Delegate role is not an option that can be assigned for firm's in the absence of the Licensee. This role is only available to firm's whose applications are licensed to the firm, and only certain firm types qualify to licensee their applications in this way. For details about the new delegate roles see, Modifying the firm delegate role. For details about firm types, see Internal: Firm types.

If a firm is requesting this role be assigned to an individual at their firm, please transfer these calls to Customer Service to review and determine if they qualify. Because the firm's licensing type determines wether they need to have an individual assigned to this role, in most cases if there is a Licensee assigned this will not be possible.

10/25/17 All Platform 2017 Notice 11/20/17 Notice Licensees must update the license PIN to complete 2017 UltraTax CS installation

New for 2017, the license PIN you use for your CS Professional Suite applications cannot match your firm's ZIP code. If your license PIN matches your ZIP code, your firm's designated Licensee or Delegate must update it to a secure PIN. For details, see Managing your license PIN.

This update is required to successfully complete the installation of 2017 UltraTax CS. If you have received a "Firm ID and PIN do not match our records" error message, contact your firm's licensee to obtain the correct PIN. For additional details about this error message, see License download failed: firm ID and PIN do not match our records.

11/17/17 All Platform All Open 11/17/17 N/A License PIN not saving / firm ID and PIN do not match

Communication was sent to firms in October explaining that they must update and/or verify their license PIN, as the PIN is no longer allowed to match the ZIP code. There have been reports of license PINs appearing to revert to the ZIP code after being updated. A fix for this issue was released 11.19.17. If a firm reports a "Firm ID and PIN do match our records" message in CS Connect, follow the instructions in the internal note of Troubleshooting license PIN update errors.
