New (tax) year, new help!

Fixed Assets and UltraTax CS 2023 help is now on Help and Support. We're still moving articles, but you can find most content for the 2023 tax year there. Continue using the Help & How-To Center for tax years 2022 and older.

Overview

Use this screen only if you intend to file this return or extension electronically. If you are required to submit an attachment to the IRS for an electronically file tax return, the application prints Form 8453 with the return.

Notes

  • See General and input screen-specific topics for electronic returns for data-entry guidelines to prevent electronic filing rejections.
  • Caution: If you have overridden a field or forced a form to print, that override may cause the IRS to reject an electronically filed return.

In the application, the Force Form to Print option is available while in form view. Choose Edit > Overrides > Force Form to Print.

  • If you are licensed for Client Organizer, there are fields available on the Organizer the ELF screen. Clients can designate whether they would like to have their return electronically filed if there is a refund, or if the refund equals or exceeds a designated amount. They can also indicate their interest in using an electronic funds withdrawal (direct debit) to pay for their tax liability. Although the application does not mark any fields automatically based on these entries, diagnostics are automatically generated if the File this return electronically box is not marked or if there is balance due for an electronic return but an electronic funds withdrawal has not been designated.
  • For more information see Electronic filing - General FAQs and Electronic Filing - Transmission and business rule FAQs.

The required documentation is a copy of both the invoice for the health insurance premiums and proof of payment. The invoice or COBRA payment coupons must have the taxpayer's name (or the name of the policy holder), the name of the health plan, the monthly premium amount, the dates of coverage, and the health plan identification numbers. Proof of payment can be canceled checks, bank statements, credit card statements or money orders. COBRA coverage also requires a copy of the COBRA Election Letter. Coverage through a spouse's employer also requires copies of paycheck stubs showing the health coverage deductions and a letter from the employer stating that the employer contributed less than 50% of the cost of coverage. See the Form 8885 instructions for further details.

An acceptable substitute for Form 8949, Sales of Other Dispositions of Capital Assets, may be attached to Form 8453 in lieu of reporting each transaction separately in the Schedule for detail statement in the B&D screen or the Broker and barter exchange transactions statement in the Broker screen. To do so, see Attaching a Form 8949 substitute to Form 8453.

Notes

  • If you choose to submit an acceptable substitute in lieu of entering each transaction separately (in the Schedule for detail statement in the B&D screen or Broker and barter exchange transactions statement in the Broker screen), the application prints Form 8453 with the return.
  • If you enter each Schedule D transaction separately in the Schedule for detail statement in the B&D screen or Broker and barter exchange transactions statement in the Broker screen, the application automatically includes Form 8949 in the electronic file and does not require an additional paper attachment to Form 8453.

Auto-generated PDF Attachments - Suppression

The application automatically generates a PDF attachment to the electronic file when the Partner's basis worksheets, Shareholder's basis worksheets, Net operating loss worksheets, Education savings account (ESA) and Qualified Tuition Program (QTP) worksheets and/or Farm income averaging worksheets are printing. Enter X in the corresponding field to suppress any of the worksheets that have been auto-generated to include in the electronic file.

To suppress the automatically generated PDF attachments for all clients not yet opened, choose Setup > 1040 Individual > Other Return Options, click the Other tab, mark the Suppress all auto-generated PDF attachments in the e-file box. These suppression fields are automatically marked when a client is opened for the first time. To include any of these PDF attachments with the electronic file, unmark any or all of these suppressed attachment fields and recreate and transmit the electronic file.
