If the taxpayer agrees, it is acceptable for an ERO and/or software application to generate or assign a taxpayer(s) PIN. The taxpayer consents to the ERO's choice by completing and signing the Form 8879, IRS e-file Signature Authorization, containing the intended taxpayer PIN. The taxpayer PIN can be systematically generated or manually assigned to the electronic return and/or the signature authorization form. However, the ERO must receive the signature authorization signed by the taxpayer(s) before they transmit the electronic file to the IRS.

Perform the following steps to have UltraTax CS automatically generate the taxpayer(s) PIN and signature date in the corresponding fields in Screen PIN for all clients qualified for electronic filing.

  1. Choose Setup > Office Configuration.
  2. In the Office Configuration dialog, click the E-Filing tab.
  3. Click the ERO button.
  4. In the ERO dialog, do one or both of the following:
    • To have UltraTax CS automatically generate the signature date: Mark the Automatically generate signature date checkbox. When this checkbox is marked, the system date of your computer will be automatically entered in the Signature date field in Screen PIN when any five-digit PIN is entered in any PIN field in Screen PIN.
    • To have UltraTax CS automatically generate the taxpayer(s) PIN: Mark the Automatically generate taxpayer(s) PIN checkbox. The taxpayer and, if applicable, spouse PINs will be generated automatically when a signature date is entered or generated in the Signature date field in Screen PIN.

Note: When both the Automatically generate signature date and Automatically generate taxpayer(s) PIN checkboxes are marked, the signature date and taxpayer(s) PINs will be generated when an ERO PIN is entered in the ERO PIN field in Screen PIN.

  5. Click DONE to close the ERO dialog.
  6. Click DONE to close the Office Configuration dialog.
