1040 e-file error: R0000-507-01

Alerts and notices

Duplicate Condition: /Return/ReturnData/IRS1040/DependentDetail/DependentSSN: 'DependentSSN' in 'DependentDetail' on the return was used as a Dependent SSN on a previously filed tax return for the same tax period. (value #########, rule R0000-507-01)

Note: The value represents the TIN of the dependent that is causing the rejection.

The dependent's SSN claimed on the tax return and/or Schedule EIC has been used on another tax return. This could be the result of an inadvertent data entry error or someone else has claimed this dependent.

  • Verify the dependent's name and SSN in the Dependent Information statement, on the 1040 screen, in the General folder. Check for spelling and transposition errors. If the data entered is incorrect, make the corrections and retransmit the return.
  • If the data is correct, explain to the taxpayer that the dependent's SSN was already used and a paper return must be filed with Form 8948. Mail the return and attach all required documents (e.g. Form 8332, Release of Claim to Exemption for Child of Divorced or Separated Parents, copy of Divorce or Separation agreement or other supporting documentation).
