Question

When should the Authorization of Agent be submitted?

Answer

Per the Form 3520-A instructions for lines 3a through 3g: “In order to authorize a U.S. person to act as an agent under section 6048(b), the trust and the agent must enter into a binding agreement,” such as the Authorization of Agent page in the tax application. A copy of the authorization must be attached to Form 3520-A.

Generate the Authorization of Agent as follows.

  1. Open Screen 3520 in the Separate Filings folder.
  2. Enter the agent information in the U.S. agent statement dialog.
  3. Enter X in the Attach U.S. agent authorization form? field to print the Authorization of Agent.
