Question

How do I amend a return that has already been amended?

Answer

  1. Open the return you need to amend and verify that the information on Form 1040 matches the information reported on the previous amended return.

Note: If any changes have been made after the previously amended return was filed, either remove the changes before performing the following steps, OR follow the procedure in this topic after completing step 5.

  2. Open Screen Amend in the Separate Filings folder.
  3. Choose Edit > Delete screen data. If you are also amending a previously amended state return, perform each step from above for all applicable state returns before moving on to the next step.
  4. Preview the return, verifying that the Form 1040 information still matches the information reported on the previously amended return.
  5. In Screen Amend, enter X in the Transfer original information field. The previously amended information transfers as the original information.

    Notes

    • The Transfer original information feature may still be used for a previously amended return if the information in the client data matches the information reported on the previously amended return.
    • If you are also amending a state return, mark the Transfer original information field in the state Amend screen before making changes to the federal information.
  6. In Screen Amend, enter the reason you are amending the return in the Explanation of changes field.
  7. In the applicable input screens, make the necessary changes to the client data.
