New (tax) year, new help!

Fixed Assets and UltraTax CS 2023 help is now on Help and Support. We're still moving articles, but you can find most content for the 2023 tax year there. Continue using the Help & How-To Center for tax years 2022 and older.

Use this dialog to select the client for whom you want to enter tax data.

To open this dialog, click the Open Client Open Client button button, choose File > Open Client, press CTRL+O, or click the Family button.

Note: There are two versions of this dialog, one containing summary information and one containing detailed information. Which version appears depends on which version was last open.

  • To switch from the summary to the detailed version, click the Detail >> button.
  • To switch from the detailed to the summary version, click the << No Detail button.

Fields & buttons

Use the drop-down list to select the data location containing the client data you want to open. Note that you must add a data location in the Setup > System Configuration > Data Locations tab before you can select it here.

Note: If you change a data location while another client is open, you will be prompted to close the open client prior to switching data locations.

If you click the word Client ID or Name in the title bar of the list pane, you can enter the first few characters of the client ID or client name in this field to search for a particular client.

Client list header row

This pane lists all clients who meet the criteria designated in the Focus group box. Highlight the client whose return you want to process and click the Open button.

Tip: To sort the client list by client ID, name, entity type, status event, or complexity value, click the word appropriate column heading in the title bar of the list pane. To view a detailed list of the values that make up the client's complexity rating, click the underlined number in the Complex column.

Notes

  • If the client's complexity rating is not displayed via the Complex column, mark the Display the Client Complexity factor checkbox in the Setup > User Preferences > Misc tab.
  • If a member of your firm logged a discourage access status event for a client, UltraTax CS displays a warning icon Discourage Access warning next to the client ID to signify the client has been flagged by a discourage access event. This icon will not display if the client is password protected. A tooltip on the icon displays the status event that was logged for that client. (You can designate a status event as a discourage access event via the Setup > Office Configuration > Status > Discourage Access dialog.)
  • If another member of your firm has a client's return open, UltraTax CS displays a lock icon Client Locked icon next to the client ID. This icon is not displayed if the client's return is password-protected. A tooltip on the icon shows the name of the staff member who has the client open/locked.
  • If a client's return is password-protected, UltraTax CS displays a key icon Password Protected icon next to the client ID. You will be prompted to enter the password when you open the client's return.

Mark one or more of the entity type checkboxes to include the corresponding clients in the client list.

Example: To include only 1040 clients in the list, clear all checkboxes except the 1040 checkbox.

Note: Mark the Other checkbox to include 990, 5500, 706, and 709 clients in the list.

Click this button to toggle between the most recent custom Custom focus button focus selection and the default Default focus button selection.

Select a preparer, reviewer, or staff member from the drop-down list to limit the list to clients whose returns were assigned to a specific person.

Choose a month from this drop-down list to restrict the list of clients whose returns have the selected month as their year-end.

This field displays the selected status event by which the client list is focused and the sorting criteria for that event. To limit the client list by a different status event or to change the sorting criteria, click the Modify button to open the Modify Event Focus dialog.

Click this button to change the selection in the adjacent field.

Other buttons

Click this button to expand this dialog and see more information about the currently highlighted client.

Note: Once opened, the detailed version of this dialog appears every time you choose File > Open Client until you click the << No Detail button to return to the summary version.
