New (tax) year, new help!

Fixed Assets and UltraTax CS 2023 help is now on Help and Support. We're still moving articles, but you can find most content for the 2023 tax year there. Continue using the Help & How-To Center for tax years 2022 and older.

If your firm has multiple offices running the same installation of UltraTax CS or has multiple firms in the same office running the same installation of UltraTax CS with an office share licensing agreement, you must specify which data location you will use to process your client's tax returns.

How you determine which location you should use depends on whether you opened UltraTax CS after or before the multiple data locations were added.

If you open UltraTax CS after multiple data locations have been added: The first time you open UltraTax CS, the Choose Office/Data Location dialog opens automatically. Choose the appropriate office from the Office drop-down list, then select the data location you want to use. Note that the corresponding depreciation client data location displays automatically in the Fixed Assets CS field.

If you open UltraTax CS before multiple data locations have been added: UltraTax CS will store data in the default directory (which is C:\WINCSI\UT13DATA, where C is the drive on which you installed UltraTax CS). To use a different data location, do the following.

  1. From the Setup menu, choose User Preferences.
  2. Click the File Locations tab.
  3. In the File Types and Locations list, select UltraTax CS client data.
  4. Click the Modify Location button.
  5. In the UltraTax CS Data Location dialog, verify that the Point to my firm's data location option is selected.
  6. Select the correct data location from the Data location drop-down list. Typically, a system administrator adds a separate data location for each firm or branch, so you should choose the firm or branch to which you belong.

    Notes

    • The corresponding depreciation location displays automatically in the Fixed Assets CS field.
    • If your firm is licensed for FileCabinet CS, the corresponding data path displays in the FileCabinet CS field.
    • If your firm is not licensed for FileCabinet CS, this field displays the location where documents are stored in File Drawer.
    • Only locations that have been entered in the Setup > System Configuration > Data Locations tab are included in the list.
  7. Click OK to close the UltraTax CS Data Location dialog.
  8. Click OK to close the User Preferences dialog.
