CS Professional Suite: Cannot access network locations with UAC enabled

Show expandable text

Some applications may not be able to access some mapped network locations with User Account Control (UAC) enabled, even though they will be accessible via the Windows Explorer. The mapped drives will show a red X, meaning they are disconnected, when browsing to them within the application. This issue occurs because UAC treats members of the Administrators group as standard users.

This issue can manifest itself in some applications that refer to registry keys for prior installations when installing newer versions (e.g. UltraTax CS). UltraTax CS will direct the installation based off where the previous installation is located; however, the installation may fail with errors referring to the network location being disconnected, unreachable, does not exist, etc.

Example

Error 1606. Could not access network location.

Workaround

  1. Run the installation until you reach the point where it asks you where to install the application.
  2. On the Product Selection dialog, click the Browse button.
  3. Navigate to the correct network location (e.g. X:\WinCSI, where X represents the drive letter to which the application is, or will be installed on) and click OK.

Note: The mapped network drive will still appear disconnected with the red X but will be accessible.

  4. Click the Browse button again and repeat step 2 above. Now the network drives should not show the red X.

You must browse out to the network location twice for this workaround!

  5. Proceed with the installation.
