A layout variable is a predefined name for a data item such as Date, Payee, or Amount. When the program encounters a layout variable while printing an actual check or payroll form, it substitutes the appropriate information from the client data. For example, the Payee variable might appear on a printed check as "Internal Revenue Service" or as "Acme Accounting Service."

When creating or editing check or form layouts, you can insert a layout variable by choosing Insert > Variable or by clicking the /_images/acct_pr/csa/leinsvar.gif button on the Layout Editor toolbar.

Inserted variables appear in blue type in the editor window, and regular text appears in your default text color.

If you were to merely type the name of the variable when editing the layout, the actual text you type would appear on the printed check or form rather than the appropriate data. Instead, you must insert the variable.

From the Layout Editor window, choose Insert > Variable. Click a variable to highlight it and then click the position in the layout where you want to insert it.
