Enter the two-character code for the current employee's withholding state, or select it from the drop-down list. This field defaults to the state selected in the applicable template.
The drop-down list for this field includes only the states that you have already listed for this client in the Payroll tab of the File > Client Properties dialog.
This field applies to the employee's state tax withholding, so your selection should be based on the employee's state W-4 information.
Choose the appropriate option from the drop-down list:
- Single
- Married
- Married - One Exemption
- Married - Two Exemptions
- Married Filing Joint
- Married One Working
- Married Both Working
- Married Separate
- Head of Household

All of the options that are available in the drop-down list may not be applicable within the selected state. If you were to choose an option that is not relevant to the selected state, the employee's state withholding amounts would not be calculated correctly. Please verify that your selection is in fact appropriate for the selected state.
Some states use withholding tables to compute state income tax liability.
Choose the withholding table appropriate for the current employee by selecting it from the drop-down list.
Mark this checkbox if the selected employee is exempt from state withholding.
Enter the number of allowances recorded on the employee's state W-4 for each of the following categories:
