Displaying file extensions is useful in troubleshooting and other uses. Windows operating systems do not display file extensions by default. Complete the steps below to display file extensions.

  1. Press the Windows button and the R key on the keyboard at the same time.
  2. In the Run dialog, type control folders.
  3. Click the View tab.
  4. Unmark the Hide extensions for known file types checkbox and click OK.

File extensions will now show in the Windows File Explorer.
