After installing a software update, you may receive the following message while the Accounting CS database is updating:

"System.ApplicationException: Database schema update failed at line… (Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding)..."

If receiving this error message, check the size of your database file located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\[Your SQL Instance]\MSSQL\Data\ACS_0_Firm.mdf.

Notes:

  • If using a 64-bit Windows environment, the application path may use the Program Files (x86) directory instead of Program Files. This would apply if the SQL instance is 32-bit instead of 64-bit.
  • You should consult with your firm's own qualified IT professional if you do not see this in the default location as it may have been installed elsewhere.

There are two situations in which this error is occurring:

Situation 1

The database being updated will exceed the size limit for Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition. Review Situation 1 Recommended solution below if the ACS_0_Firm.mdf is equal or close to the limit, it is likely exceeding the limit.

Recommended solution

Once the file size limit has been reached in Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition, it is necessary to upgrade to a Microsoft SQL Server Standard Edition or move to Virtual Office. For the short term, we would recommend moving back to the prior software version to allow you to continue processing. This will require uninstalling and re-installing Accounting CS and updating to the prior version. Follow the steps below to revert back to the prior version:

  1. Uninstall Accounting CS and Accounting CS Shared Files.
  2. Browse out to the X:\WinCSI\Accounting CS\updates folder, where X represents the drive letter the program was installed on.
  3. Delete the update file with the highest version number.
  4. Install Accounting CS.
  5. Open the program to be prompted to download and apply updates.
  6. When asked “Would you like to check for program updates?”, choose Yes.
  7. Unmark the Retrieve and apply available updates checkbox and select Apply previously downloaded updates/licenses, then click Apply Now button.
  8. Once the updates apply, press the Close button and complete the update process and open Accounting CS.

Situation 2

The default time out period needs to be extended due to a large amount of data being processed. Review Situation 2 Recommended solution below if the file size is less than 10GB or you are using a Microsoft SQL Server Standard Edition.

Recommended solution

Extend the time out period. A time out can occur when processing data takes longer than the allotted time to process. This can be due to an environmental factor causing a lag or hesitation during the process and/or a large amount of a specific type of data being processed. Follow these steps to increase the time allotted to one hour.

  1. Have everyone exit and close out of Accounting CS.
  2. Navigate to X:\WinCSI\Accounting CS and open the NetworkInstallation.ini file in Notepad.
  3. Add the text “SqlCommandTimeoutSeconds=3600” within the [appSettings] section. Show me.
    Extend Time Out
  4. Save the change and close the file.
  5. Re-open Accounting CS.

Notes

  • Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition users will receive a warning message opening the program that states that you have reached 80% (or more) of the maximum size allowed by your version of Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition.
  • If you are running on SQL Express there is a data size limitation. Upgrading to Microsoft SQL Server Standard Edition is necessary to access or process in a database once it has reached that size.

Situation 3

Security software may interfere with the update process. Please review the linked documentation to rule out overprotective Security applications.
