Fixed Assets CS: Unable to apply software updates via CS Connect

Show expandable text

Try the following when you are unable to apply CS Connect updates.

  • In Fixed Assets CS, choose Help > About Fixed Assets CS. Verify that you are not trying to apply an update to a version of the program you have not yet installed. For example, if you are on version 13.2 and the update is for version 14.1.4, then you will not be able to apply the update successfully until you install the 2014.1 web download.
  • Restart your computer and apply the updates with no other applications running.
  • Verify that no client locks exist. Client locks can be found and removed by choosing Help > Repair > File Locks.
  • If you are on a network, try to apply the update from a different workstation or from the server.
  • Delete contents of the Updates directory, and redownload the updates. To do this, access Help > Repair > Misc and click the Clear Updates Directory. Or open Windows Explorer and navigate to X:\WinCSI\DSW\Updates, where X is the drive letter where the program is installed. Delete everything except the Data folder within the Updates folder, and then use CS Connect to re-download and apply updates.
  • Reboot in Safe Mode with Networking. In Safe Mode, many non-essential Windows services are turned off. The video card in your computer, which lets you set the size of icons and your screen resolution, is also turned off. This will eliminate any conflicts that may be occurring while running the desktop setup installation. To boot up in Safe Mode, follow the instructions outlined below.
    1. Choose Start / Shut Down /Restart.
    2. When your workstation begins to boot up, continuously press your F8 function key. This will prompt your computer to boot up in Safe Mode. When you are prompted with the option, select Safe Mode with Networking.
    3. Once Windows is in Safe Mode, try applying the updates again.
  • Disable anti-virus and/or firewalls. Note that starting your computer in safe mode does not necessarily disable all anti-virus applications. Refer to your anti-virus software vendor's help resources for information about disabling their software. If disabling anti-virus solves the update issue, you may need to add the WinCSI directory to your anti-virus software exceptions list
  • Reinstall: If updating keeps failing, it is recommended that you reinstall Fixed Assets CS using the most recent Fixed Assets CS web download. Once the program is reinstalled, download and apply the updates again via CS Connect.

Note:

  • Fixed Assets CS will remain open when applying update, but you will need to close and re-open the application for the applied updates to become available.
  • If CS Connect encounters a problem while applying updates, the updates are not applied and the application remains at the most recent successfully updated version. In this case, subsequent updates for the current session are placed on hold.
  • At the end of a CS Connect call, CS Connect will automatically apply any downloaded updates that have not been applied, even if updates were not downloaded during that particular call.
  • If CS Connect receives a busy signal or no answer when attempting to connect to our secure data centers, it will attempt to reconnect up to nine times during a one-hour period.
  • While the Online Status dialog displays, the computer is connected to our secure data centers. CS Connect automatically logs off from those servers and disconnects the call after it completes its processes. However, you can click the Cancel Call button at any time to disconnect the call. If you accidentally disconnect the call while downloading updates, you will need to connect to our secure data centers later to download the remaining updates.
  • You can sign up to receive email alerts about CS Professional Suite updates. For more information, visit the CS Professional Suite Homepage. (Note that you must create a web account to sign up for email subscriptions.)
