MFA required for electronic filing

Effective May 3rd, the 2017 version of UltraTax CS requires multi-factor authentication (MFA) to access the electronic filing transmission feature in CS Connect.

What is the Practitioner PIN and who can participate in the program?


The IRS offers two ways to electronically sign tax returns: the Self-Select PIN and the Practitioner PIN. With the Practitioner PIN, the Electronic Return Originator (ERO) is responsible for verifying the identity of the taxpayer and the spouse, if applicable. Therefore, entering shared, secret information (prior-year AGI and date(s) of birth) is not needed. To designate that you want to use the Practitioner PIN program for your clients, choose Setup > Office Configuration, click the E-Filing tab, click the ERO button, and mark the Practitioner PIN Program filer (1040 Only) checkbox. You can then use the Practitioner PIN process for all of your clients.


  • Form 2350 extensions do not qualify for the Practitioner PIN. You must enter the appropriate data for the Self-Select PIN.
  • You can use the Self-Select PIN on a per-client basis by marking the Self-Select PIN field in Screen PIN.
