Question

When should I use the Worksheet for Beneficiaries to compute a required minimum distribution?

Answer

When the IRA or qualified retirement plan was inherited, enter the type of beneficiary the taxpayer/spouse is in the Designated beneficiary field on Screen 1099R-3 to calculate the Worksheet for Beneficiaries. Data entry will also be required in the Deceased owner date of birth and Deceased owner date of death fields to compute the RMD the taxpayer/spouse must withdraw as a beneficiary from the account.

Note: Do not use this worksheet for a surviving spouse who elects to treat an inherited IRA or qualified retirement plan account as his/her own or rolls the inherited IRA or qualified retirement plan into his/her own IRA or qualified retirement plan account. Instead, use the Worksheet for Owners.
