Diagnostic message

Form 2553 must be signed and attached as a PDF file; select Edit > Electronic Filing Attachments


This diagnostic generates if you complete the Reason for failing to file election by due date field in Screen 2553, located under the Elections folder, enter 2 in the File Form 2553 as an attachment to Form 1120S field in Screen 2553, and have not attached Form 2553 as a PDF attachment to the electronic file.

To attach a PDF document to the electronic file, follow these steps.

  1. In UltraTax CS, choose Edit > Electronic Filing Attachment.
  2. Click the Add button.
  3. In the Attachment title drop-down list, select the specific title of the document from the list of attachments that the taxing authorities require for electronically filed returns. If the attachment is not in the drop-down list, enter the name of the attachment in this field.
  4. In the Product field, select Federal from the drop-down list.
  5. In the Return field, select the form related to the location of the attachment from the drop-down list. If the specific form is not listed in the drop-down list, select Tax Return.
  6. If the document was scanned into FileCabinet CS, click the FileCabinet CS option, and then click the Select button to select the appropriate document. If the document was not scanned into FileCabinet CS, click the File option and click the Browse button to navigate to the location of the document you want to attach.

    If the file is not saved as a PDF file, the file will not be listed when you click the Browse button.


    • If you are running UltraTax CS through Virtual Office CS or Software as a Service (SaaS), you can navigate to files on your local network.
    • If you want to proforma this attachment next year, mark the Proforma information to next year checkbox.
  7. Click OK to return to the Electronic Filing Attachment dialog.
  8. Click the View Attachment button to see the PDF file that will be included in the electronic file. Repeat steps 2 - 7 to add more attachments.
  9. When you are done, click OK to close the dialog. Now, when you create the electronic file, the attachments will be included as part of the file.
