New (tax) year, new help!

Fixed Assets and UltraTax CS 2023 help is now on Help and Support. We're still moving articles, but you can find most content for the 2023 tax year there. Continue using the Help & How-To Center for tax years 2022 and older.

By default, UltraTax CS automatically skips certain input screen and statement fields based on the presence of data in other related fields. Called "smart data entry," this feature helps to expedite data entry by allowing you to automatically bypass fields in which data entry is not required.

Examples:

  • Some fields are skipped because data entered elsewhere has made entering data in the skipped fields unnecessary. For example, UltraTax/1040 skips the T/S/J fields if you indicated in Screen 1040 that the client is single.
  • Some fields may already contain data that was proforma'd from last year, retrieved from Write-Up CS or other accounting applications, transferred from the federal return, or calculated elsewhere on the return. In that case, the information is displayed in blue, and the cursor will automatically skip over the field.

If you do not want the cursor to skip fields with data displayed in blue, follow these steps.

  1. From the Setup menu, choose User Preferences.
  2. If it is not already marked, mark the Visit All Fields checkbox in the Data Entry tab.
  3. Click OK.

Tip: While in tax data entry, you can click the right mouse button and select Visit All Fields to quickly stop the cursor from skipping these fields.
