Filing and attaching Form 8865 to electronic files (1120)

Form 8865 can be electronically filed only if the form is attached to the filer's electronic file. The form cannot be electronically filed separately.

  1. With UltraTax CS, create the electronic file for the Form 8865 return as you would for any other electronic return.
  2. With the 1120 client's return open, choose Edit > Electronic Filing Attachments.
  3. Click the Add button.
  4. In the Product field, select Federal from the drop-down list.
  5. In the Return field, select Tax Return from the drop-down list.
  6. In the Attachment title field, select 8865 E-file from the drop-down list.
  7. In the Attachment file source group box, click the 8865 option, click the Browse button, and navigate to and select the appropriate Form 8865 electronic file. The electronic file will have a .xef extension. Show me.

    Notes

    • The 8865 electronic file will be located in X:\Wincsi\UT18Data\$SYSDATA\attachments.
    • If you are running UltraTax CS through Virtual Office CS or Software as a Service (SaaS), to select the .xef file, navigate to Y:\UT18Data\$SYSDATA\attachments. This location is already selected by default when you click the Browse button.
    • If you want to proforma this attachment next year, mark the Proforma information to next year checkbox.
  8. Click OK to return to the Electronic Filing Attachments dialog.
  9. Repeat steps 2 - 8 to attach additional Forms 8865.
  10. When you have attached all applicable Forms 8865, click OK to close the dialog.
  11. Create the electronic file for the filer's return. UltraTax CS will including Form 8865 in the filer's electronic file.

Notes

  • Form 8865 returns can be electronically filed only if filing Form 1120, 1120S, 1065, 1040, or 1041.
  • Multiple Form 8865 electronic files can be attached to the filer's return, as needed.
  • All Form 8865 electronic files must be created and attached to the filer's return before you create the filer's electronic file.
  • The Form 8865 electronic file should pass all UltraTax CS electronic filing error checking before you attach the Form 8865 electronic file to the filer's electronic file.
