Question

Can I use electronic signatures with electronic filing extensions?

Answer

Yes, but they are required only if you are using electronic funds withdrawal to pay a balance due. On Screen ELFExt in the Electronic Filing folder, in the Form 7004 and 8868 - Extension Information section, complete the following fields: Taxpayer PIN, Signature date, and ERO PIN. This will generate Form 8878-A, which must be signed by the taxpayer and returned to the ERO prior to transmitting the electronic file. The ERO maintains this form and does not mail it to the IRS unless requested to do so. If you are not using electronic funds withdrawal, then a signature is not required and these fields are not necessary.
