UltraTax CS offers two methods for filing Form 4868 extensions electronically: Automated data entry and Manual data entry.

Automated data entry

To create a Form 4868 electronic extension using automated data entry, follow these steps.

Note: When you use automated data entry to create Form 4868 electronic extensions, UltraTax CS automatically completes the required fields in Screens ELF and Ext.

  1. Choose Setup > 1040 Individual to open the 1040 Product Information dialog.
  2. Click the Extensions button.
  3. In the Extensions dialog, you have the option to exclude total tax liability and payment amounts with the extension. Mark the Create an extension without total tax liability or payments amounts checkbox as desired.
  4. Click OK to close the Extensions dialog.
  5. Click OK to close the 1040 Product Information dialog.
  6. Choose File > Open to open the client's return.
  7. Choose File > Print Extensions.
  8. Mark the Create electronic file checkbox.
  9. Click the Options button to open the Print Options dialog.
  10. Click the Selected Returns tab, and mark only the Federal checkbox.
  11. Click the Extension Print Options tab, and click the First extension option in the Which group box.
  12. Click OK to return to the Print Extensions dialog.
  13. If you want to choose multiple clients, click the Clients button, and select the extension clients you want to transmit.
  14. Click the Print or the E-File button to check for errors and create the Form 4868 electronic file and to have UltraTax CS automatically enter data in the required fields in Screens ELF and Ext.
  15. Follow the normal procedures to transmit the electronic returns using CS Connect.

Manual data entry

Preparing to file a Form 4868 extension electronically

Note: UltraTax CS supports electronically filed extensions for Arizona, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas.

  1. Enter 1 in the Calculate extension field in Screen Ext, in the Payments folder, to calculate the first extension.
  2. Enter 4868 in the File extension electronically field in Screen ELF, in the Electronic Filing folder.
  3. Complete the appropriate fields for the required self-selected Personal Identification Number (PIN) data in Screen PIN. The PIN fields are required only if you are electronically filing the first extension with an Electronic Funds Withdrawal (direct debit).
  4. Review the diagnostic messages (press CTRL+D or choose View > Diagnostics).

Note: To access global extension options, choose Setup > 1040 Individual, click the Federal tab, and click the Extensions button. These options include setting correspondence addresses, printing the preparer's name on Form 4868, and including the projected estimated tax penalty in the balance due on extension for federal and state returns.

Creating the electronic extension

To create a Form 4868 electronic extension using manual data entry, follow these steps.

  1. Choose File > Print Extensions.
  2. Mark the Create electronic file checkbox.
  3. Click the Options button and then click the Extension Print Options tab. Verify that the First extension option in the Which group box is selected.

    Note: UltraTax CS defaults to your extension print selections, so you may need to update these selections the next time you print an extension.

  4. If you want to choose multiple clients, click the Clients button, and select the extension clients you want to transmit.
  5. Click the Print or the E-File button to create the Form 4868 electronic file.
  6. Follow the normal procedures to transmit the electronic returns using CS Connect.
