Question

How does the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) differ from the Lifetime Learning Credit?

Answer

The AOTC includes expenses for course-related books, supplies and equipment which are not necessarily paid to the educational institution. Enter only the qualified expenses that are not paid directly to the educational institution in the Non-institution Expenses column.
