1120 New York City ELF: Electronically filing a consolidated return if New York members differ from federal members

To electronically file a New York City combined return when the members are different from the federal consolidated group, complete the following steps.

  1. Clone the existing federal consolidated client. Open the federal consolidated client, choose File > Save As, enter a new client ID for the client, and click the Save button. This new client has the same EIN and name as the federal consolidated client, but is used for New York City purposes only. UltraTax CS generates the combined Form NYC-3A, Combined General Corporation Tax Return, from this consolidated client.
  2. Select the appropriate members to be included in the New York City combined group. Choose File > Client Properties and click the Advanced Properties button. In the Group tab, remove or add subsidiaries as necessary. Click OK to close the Advanced Properties dialog. Click OK again to close the Client Properties dialog.
  3. Add New York to the new consolidated client.
  4. Mark the File this return electronically field in federal Screen ELF for each member of the consolidated group.
  5. Mark the New York City members different from federal consolidated members field in Screen NYNYCELF.
  6. Attach a pdf of the federal return filed with the IRS. Choose Edit > Electronic Filing Attachments, click the Add button. Select "Federal Return" in the Attachment title field. In the Product field select New York. In the Return field select New York City Return. If the document was scanned into FileCabinet CS, click the FileCabinet CS option and then click the Select button to select the appropriate document. If the document was not scanned into FileCabinet CS, click the File option and click the Browse button to browse to the location of the document you want to attach.
  7. Review all diagnostics and clear all ELF diagnostics from the consolidated return and each member.
  8. With the consolidated client closed, choose File > Print Returns. Mark both the Government copy and the Create electronic file checkboxes. Click the Clients button and select all members of the consolidated group including the consolidated client and the eliminations client, if applicable.
  9. Print the return to generate the electronic file either to a printer or to FileCabinet CS. Note that you will not be able to preview the returns in UltraTax CS when selecting multiple clients.
  10. Follow the normal procedures to send the returns electronically via CS Connect.
