The California Franchise Tax Board supports electronic funds withdrawal of the California extension payment via electronic filing.

Generating an Extension Payment

Use Screen CAExt to generate an extension payment amount. Per FTB guidelines, the application does not create an electronic record for extension payment if there is no payment amount.

Conditions to Generate Electronic Record, Signature Forms, and Filing Instructions

To generate the electronic record for extension payment, electronic filing signature Form 8453(PMT) or Form 8879(PMT), and the related filing instructions, all of the following conditions must be met before generating the extension payment via File > Print Extensions.

Federal Screen ELF:

  • File the return electronically field is marked
  • Suppress the creation of State electronic file(s) field is blank
  • Suppress the creation of Both federal and state electronic files field is blank

Federal Screen 1040:

  • Enter Daytime telephone

Screen CAELF:

  • Suppress California e-file field is blank

Screen CABank:

  • Enable electronic funds withdrawal for extension payment field is marked

Form 3519:

  • Payment amount is greater than zero.

In addition to the conditions above, bank information is required in order to create the electronic record for electronic funds withdrawal of the extension payment. The fields below are required data entry:

Screen CABank:

Primary account:

  • Routing transit number
  • Name of financial institution
  • Depositor account number
  • Type of account

If taxpayer is authorizing electronic funds withdrawal of extension payment using a PIN, the following conditions must be met in order to print Form 8879(PMT):

Screen CAELF - Section for Extension Payment PIN Information:

  • Suppress California use of PIN field must be blank
  • Signature date fields must be completed
  • PIN authorization indicator field must be completed
  • PIN fields for Taxpayer (and Spouse) must be completed

If the PIN information is incomplete, the application prints Form 8453(PMT) instead.

Form 3519 Text

When electronic funds withdrawal for extension payment is authorized, Form 3519 prints with reminder text indicating that the form should not be submitted as the payment is being made via electronic funds withdrawal.
