California has a mandatory e-filing requirement that requires many, but not all, preparers to electronically file all qualifying returns. Electronic filing for California is independent from the Electronic Filing utility. California uses the independent electronic filing method, in which a separate electronic file is created for state purposes. The application does not require that the federal return must be filed electronically to file the California return electronically.
