Follow the instructions below to prepare a California Registered Domestic Partner return:

Complete single federal returns for each of the partners. The California returns must remain attached to both clients. In the California screens for these single filed returns, mark the Suppress California return field in Screen CARDP, located in the General folder, in each of the CARDP clients. An X in this field allows the following behavior:

  • California forms and worksheets do not print. No additional print collation changes or options are required to be entered. Forms appear with no data in form view.
  • The California electronic file is automatically not created. No additional e-file suppression is required.
  • Current-year information calculated in the Domestic Partner client proformas to next year’s federal screens in this client. When data is available to proforma to next year’s federal screens, Screen CARDP displays the client ID of the Domestic Partner client used to calculate the California return. When this field is blank, no California information will proforma.
  • State data entered in federal screens is merged into the joint Domestic Partner client and then federal-to-state transferred to the state screens. All State, if different data for K1, K1T, C, E, F, 4835, and 2106 activities, including data entered in the multi-state allocation spreadsheets, merges into the joint client. California carryovers for Section 179, shareholder / partner basis, at-risk, and passive activity carryovers are retained.
  • The diagnostic report prints with applicable information. A critical diagnostic displays a reminder that this client is not used to file the California return and that data entered on the state tax and organizer screens does not merge into the joint clients. Additional informational diagnostic messages display with information about proforma of data to next year.
  • The Tax Summary worksheet prints with a reminder that the California return is not filed from this client. The application requires this form to print to print the diagnostic messages and allow proforma to next year.
  • Automatic updating of other state tax credit information to or from the California return is suppressed. All necessary data must be manually entered in the applicable state screen.

After completing the two separate federal returns, create the new Domestic Partner return using the instructions in the federal help document. For more information, see Merging individual clients for married filing joint and domestic partnership returns. All federal data entry that applies to the California return is transferred to the attached state returns. Review the data entry to adjust for any differences necessary to change the filing status to married. Enter any state specific data required in the state input screens. In the Domestic Partner type return, the California return has the following behavior:

  • All California forms, worksheets, and statements calculate and print.
  • The California RDP Adjustment Worksheet prints from this return. The Pro Forma federal 1040 return calculated in this Domestic Partner return also prints with the state return as a federal attachment. The separately filed 1040 returns are not printed with this return. If needed, print the returns from the individual clients for attachment to a paper filed California Domestic Partner return.
  • Electronic files are created for the California return. The Pro Forma joint federal return and the RDP Adjustment Worksheet are included in the electronic file as allowed by the state.
  • Information transfers between the California tax and organizer input screens.
  • The Federal AGI statement dialog in Screen CARDP displays the information from the two separate clients required to calculate the California RDP Adjustment Worksheet. The amounts from this worksheet are transferred to Schedule CA, column A.
  • The Federal AGI used to calculate California credits and limitations is the combined Federal AGI from both single filed federal returns.
  • California carryover information is calculated and available to proforma to next year.
  • Automatic updating of other state tax credit information to or from the California return is suppressed. All necessary data must be manually entered in the applicable state screen.
Note: If changes are made to the separate, single clients after the joint Domestic Partner return is created, the two separate clients must be re-merged to reflect those changes. However, all current year data in all federal screens and asset module in the joint, RDP client are overwritten with this process. Adjustments made to federal or asset data entry in the joint Domestic Partner client are lost. Prior-year carryover data is preserved only when the Retain prior-year carryover amounts when re-combining current year data checkbox is marked during the merge process. Alternatively, information may be directly entered in the RDP return. Force fields are available in the Federal AGI statement dialog in Screen CARPD (in the General folder) as needed to adjust the federal information required to calculate the California RDP Adjustment Worksheets.
