Use Screen ComPSt, located under the Federal General folder, to enter information used to complete the community property state allocation record that is included in the electronic file. The allocation record serves the same purpose as the Allocation Worksheet when filing a paper return and following the rules for community property states.

Note: Screen ComPSt is located under the Electronic Filing folder in prior years.

Important! This screen can only be accessed for married filing separate (MFS) returns in community property states (AZ, CA, ID, LA, NM, NV, TX, WA, and WI); therefore, the filing status must be married filing separate and the postal code for the Residence Information on Screen 1040 must be one of the states mentioned.

State Electronic Filing Note: The IRS will reject a Federal e-file if the community property state allocation is not completed when married filing separately with an address in a community property state. Arizona returns file electronically also are subject to that requirement. All other state returns can be filed electronically regardless of whether or not this allocation is completed.

Prior to any entry on Screen ComPSt, complete the data entry and perform a print preview for the Federal and, if applicable, state returns. Recreate the electronic file anytime the amounts in this input screen are changed.
