How do I amend a prior year return on the current version of Form 1040X?

Answer

Prior years of the application will not be updated with the current version of Form 1040X. The IRS has indicated for any year's amended return, the version of Form 1040X that first covered that year and any subsequent revision can all be used to amend that year's return, regardless of when it is filed. For example, the 2009 version of Form 1040X can be used to file a 2009 amended return regardless of when it is filed.
