New (tax) year, new help!

Fixed Assets and UltraTax CS 2023 help is now on Help and Support. We're still moving articles, but you can find most content for the 2023 tax year there. Continue using the Help & How-To Center for tax years 2022 and older.

If UltraTax CS crashes when you attempt to Data Mine, open, or proforma a client, see the information below to determine how to resolve the issue.

Not responding

If UltraTax CS says "Not responding," that could be an indication that the client is simply taking longer to open or proforma. As a first step, wait to see if the process continues on its own.

Large clients will take longer to open or complete. Clients with a lot of K1s, state, shareholders, partners, assets, or consolidated returns, are considered large. A good measure of how large a client file is the client complexity, which you can see  next to the client name/ID in File > Open Client. A complexity value greater than 500 can be considered as a large client file.

Try another workstation

If possible, go to another workstation and try to Data Mine, open, or proforma the client.

  • If this works, the client is not corrupt. This is an indication that there's something environmental preventing the client from opening or proforma'ing at the original workstation.
  • If this does not work, the client is likely corrupt.

Try a different client

Attempt to open or proforma a different client of the same entity type.

  • If the proforma for another client works, the original client is likely be corrupt.
  • If the proforma for another client does not work, the entity may need to be reinstalled. Otherwise, there could be an environmental issue interfering with the program files for this entity.

Rebuild the client list

If you see the client listed in the Data Mining or proforma window but it consistently freezes, or if you do not see the client file but know it is there, a rebuild might be necessary.  To do this, choose Help > Repair > Rebuild Client List.

Restore client data

If, after testing, you determine that the client is corrupt, the best option is to restore the client from a backup. If you utilize a third-party backup system or software, consult your qualified IT professional to restore the client data.

You may also attempt to restore client folders in the UTYYData folder (where YY represents the year of UltraTax CS) using Windows Backup if you have system protection enabled. Consult your firm's IT professional for assistance using Windows Backup.

Thank you for the feedback!

Internal only

If the client is corrupt and the firm has no backups, see the CF for approval to get the client data in-house. Do not make any promises to the customer about our ability to restore data.

Sometimes, decompressing the client data by going to Help > Repair and choosing Decompress client can help.

Howeverin the past, Support has gone one step further in decompressing and deleted the General Client Data and Data Block files as part of troubleshooting. This SHOULD NOT be done as we cannot reasonably assume that all the data will be repopulated after deleting it.
