New (tax) year, new help!

Fixed Assets and UltraTax CS 2023 help is now on Help and Support. We're still moving articles, but you can find most content for the 2023 tax year there. Continue using the Help & How-To Center for tax years 2022 and older.

When you indicate Yes in the Authorize discussion with IRS field on the federal 1040 screen (or on the Gen screen of any state return), the 3rd party designee will default to the paid preparer on the tax return.

Go to Setup > Office Configuration > Preparers tab to edit the designee information for the paid preparer, or indicate that the designee is someone different for all clients assigned to that preparer.

Default to preparer

If you want the preparer the default designee for all clients assigned to them, verify that you have all preparer information, including the Designee PIN field, complete, and you have the Preparer (above) is the default designee option selected.

When the 3rd party designee is the paid preparer, the box in the Paid Preparer section of Form 1040 will be checked. If you are filing a nonresident alien return (1040NR or 1040NR-EZ), the 3rd party designee section will be completed on the return.

Default to someone else

If you want the designee to be someone other than the preparer for all clients assigned to that preparer, mark the Someone other than the preparer is the default designee option in the Third Party Designee section and complete the information. This information will complete the Third Party Designee section of Form 1040, Schedule 6.

Client-by-client basis

You can override 3rd party designee information on a client-by-client basis (for example, to designate a family member). In the client's return, go to the Contact screen in the General folder and complete the Third Party Designee section. Data you enter here will supersede the global setup you have in Setup > Office Configuration.

You can set the designee option for all new 1040 clients or 1040 clients converted from another application, then override it on a client-by-client basis. Choose Setup > 1040 Individual > New Client Options, and select Yes or No from the Allow 3rd part designee to discuss with IRS field field.
