Most brokers issue their own Form 8949 substitute statement. To attach a substitute statement: 

  1. Go to the Income input folder.
  2. Click Broker screen.
  3. Open the Proceeds from broker transactions statement.
  4. In the Desc field, enter "See attached". You can also add more descriptive text if you wish.
  5. Enter the total amounts of capital gains and losses.
  6. In the Force field, enter 1 for short-term, 2 for long-term, or 3 for 28% rate.
  7. If multiple items exist, enter the summary statement items within the first 10 rows of the statement to ensure proper processing by the IRS.
  8. Scan the Form 8949 and save the scanned copy on your computer or computer network.
  9. The IRS recommends that you save the PDF attachment of Form 8949 as "Form 8949 Exception to reporting" followed by a name to identify the broker. 
  10. In UltraTax CS, choose Edit > Electronic Filing Attachments.

    Note: If Electronic Filing Attachments is not enabled, mark the File this return electronically field in Screen ELF in the Electronic Filing folder for the client's return.

  11. Click the Add button.
  12. In the Product field, select Federal from the drop-down list.
  13. In the Return field, select Tax Return, if not already entered.
  14. In the Attachment title drop-down list, select Form 8949 Exception to reporting <enter name> and change "<enter name>" to the broker's name.
  15. Click the File option and click the Browse button to navigate to the location of the substitute statement you want to attach.
  16. Click OK to return to the Electronic Filing Attachment dialog. Repeat steps 4 - 9 to add more attachments.
  17. Click the View Attachment button to view the PDF file that will be included in the electronic file.
  18. When finished, click OK to close the dialog. Now, when you create the electronic file, the attachments will be included as part of the file.

UltraTax CS produces an Electronic Filing - PDF Attachment Report that lists the PDF files, including the title of the PDF files and the attachment source of the files, that you have attached to the electronic file for each return.
