Question

How do I answer the questions on the IRS e-file application?

Answer

The following tips are for preparers who transmit electronically filed returns through the UltraTax CS Electronic Filing utility.

Note: If you are using a third-party transmitter, contact your vendor for product recommendations.

Applying online: After you have registered and logged in to the IRS's e-services - Online Tools for Tax Professionals webpage (which is accessible by pointing your internet browser to www.irs.gov/taxpros and clicking the "e-services - Online Tools for Tax Professionals" link), in the "Program(s) Applying For" section, select Electronic Return Originator. You may also need to select Intermediate Service Provider if you plan to file returns electronically from other electronic return originators (EROs) to the IRS on your clients' behalf (review the rules for Intermediate Service Providers in IRS Publication 1345 for additional information). Do not select Large Taxpayer, Online Provider, Software Developer, or Transmitter. If you have multiple business locations, you must add each location from which electronic returns will be transmitted. In the "Form(s)" section, select the types of returns that you will file electronically in the future. We recommend that you select all forms except 1120 POL, 2290, 720, and 8849.

Application to Participate in the Electronic Filing Program: You can access and submit the application on the IRS's e-services - Online Tools for Tax Professionals webpage (which is accessible by pointing your internet browser to www.irs.gov/taxpros and clicking the "e-services - Online Tools for Tax Professionals" link). If your application is approved, you will receive an electronic filing identification number (EFIN). Once approved by the IRS, you do not need to reapply in subsequent years unless you did not file returns electronically in recent prior years, were suspended from the IRS e-file program, or your business information has changed.

If you have multiple business locations, you must submit an application to obtain a unique EFIN for each location that transmits returns electronically. Also, if you plan to electronically file any business returns (940, 941, 990, 1041, 1065, and 1120), you need to revise your application accordingly.
