Amend returns to change the filing status (1040)

To amend a return and change the filing status, follow the steps for the status you want to change to.

Deadlines for amended returns with filing status changes may differ from other types of amended returns. For information, see IRS Publication 504.

Change to Married Filling Jointly 

  1. Merge the two separate clients into one joint client using the joint merge utility.
  2. Open the joint client.
  3. Choose File > Client Properties.
  4. On the Federal tab, make sure 1040 (Individual) is selected in the drop-down.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Go to the Separate Filings folder and click the Amend screen.
  7. Enter the information originally reported on the Taxpayer's separate return.

    Do not mark the Transfer original information box.

  8. Open the Explanation of changes statement and enter the reason for amending the return.

Change to Married Filing Separately, Single, or Head of Household

  1. Review the joint client to make sure that everything is coded correctly as Taxpayer, Spouse, or Joint.
  2. Split the joint client by running the Filing Status Optimization utility.
  3. Open the taxpayer or spouse return. 
  4. Go to the General input folder and click the 1040 screen.
  5. Change the filing status to the appropriate code.
  6. Go to the Separate Filings folder and click the Amend screen.
  7. Enter the information originally reported on the joint client.

    Do not mark the Transfer original information box.

  8. Open the Explanation of changes statement and enter the reason for amending the return.
