Question

How do I print and file a U.S. Virgin Islands return for a U.S. citizen or resident alien who is not a bona fide resident of the U.S. Virgin Islands?

Answer

Perform the following steps.

  1. Enter all data in the return as usual.
  2. Enter information in Screen 8689 in the Other with Return folder to complete Form 8689.
  3. Print two copies of the return by one of the following methods.

    • Print one copy of the return. UltraTax CS prints both the Virgin Islands instructions and the regular filing instructions by default. Then make one identical copy of the entire return and assemble the return with the Virgin Islands filing instructions.
    • Print two copies of the return. Assemble one copy with the regular filing instructions and one copy with the Virgin Islands filing instructions.
    • Print one copy of the return. With the return open, choose File > Save As to save a copy of the return with a different UltraTax CS client name. With the new, duplicate return open, enter X in the Print only V.I. filing instructions field in Screen 8689 to have UltraTax CS suppress all other filing instructions. Then print a second copy of the return from the new, duplicate client.
  4. File one signed copy of the return with the U.S. Department of the Treasury and one identical copy with the Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue.
