All withholding reported on CA Form 540 or Form 540NR originates from data entry on federal input screens. By default, any California withholding is reported on Form 540, line 71, or Form 540NR, line 81. Therefore, any withholding reported via Form 592-B or 593 will need to be classified as so within UltraTax CS. To properly classify the withholdings, use the following steps based on the type of form received and the type of entity.

  • Withholdings from Form 593 - To properly report withholdings from Form 593 that are not from a pass-through entity on Form 540 or 540NR, enter the withholdings in the federal A screen, located under the Itemized folder, in the State and local income tax section, using a Code 3 - Real estate withholding. No further data entry is required for paper filed returns. See below for returns being filed electronically.
  • Withholdings from Form 592-B - To properly report withholdings from Form 592-B that are not from a pass-through entity on Form 540 or 540NR, enter the amount of withholdings from this form as state withholding on the federal StPmt screen, located in the Payments folder, in the Other withholding field. The same amount must also be entered in the CA592-B screen, located under the Payments folder within the CA input screens, in the Total California tax withheld field in order to report the amount on Form 540, line 73, or Form 540NR, line 83. No further data entry is required for paper filed returns. See below for returns being filed electronically.

Electronically filed returns

Any amount reported as Real Estate and Other withholding (Form 593 and Form 592-B withholding) on California Form 540 or Form 540NR must be reconciled for electronic filing purposes.

  • Form 593 - For electronically filed returns, you must complete the 593 screens, located in the Payments folder within the CA input screens. This is a multi-unit screen and the total amount within the Amount withheld from this seller field must equal the amount reported on line 73 of Form 540, or line 83 of Form 540NR.
  • Form 592-B - For electronically filed returns, you must complete the 592B screen, located in the Payments folder within the CA input screens, including Total California tax withheld and Total backup withholding fields as applicable. The sum of these two fields must equal the total amount on line 73 of Form 540, or line 83 of Form 540NR.

Note: When the applicable screens are not filled out completely, the following diagnostic will generate: "Real estate withholding (from Form 593) and Nonresident/Other withholding (from Form 592-B) reported on Form 540 line 73 or Form 540NR line 83 must equal the total of the amounts entered on units of the CA592B (Part IV) screen in the "Total California tax withheld" and "Total backup withholding" fields and units of the CA593 (Part III) screen in the "Total amount withheld from this seller" field."
