Setting up custom statements

New (tax) year, new help!

Fixed Assets and UltraTax CS 2023 help is now on Help and Support. We're still moving articles, but you can find most content for the 2023 tax year there. Continue using the Help & How-To Center for tax years 2022 and older.

UltraTax CS provides many statement dialogs that you can use to enter detailed information that is required by taxing authorities. In addition, you can set up custom statements for any field that:

  • Is not a Unit field for multiple-unit input screens.
  • Does not have a fieldview attached, as indicated by an arrow to the right of the field.
  • Does not already have an attached statement dialog, as indicated by the Statement Statement button button to the left of the field.

Notes

  • Once you set up a custom statement, it is automatically attached to any client subsequently opened for processing, and to all clients subsequently added to or proforma'd into UltraTax CS. Once a custom statement is attached to a client, it cannot be removed in the current year.
  • Custom statements are designed to work with standard dollar amount fields, therefore, they may not behave as expected when added to a non-standard amount field. For example, on 1040-US, Screen A, a custom statement attached to the fields for Medical miles driven and Volunteer miles driven would not work as expected because the mileage is not a dollar amount. Rather, the presence of a custom statement on this field causes the amount to be omitted from the return calculation.

Creating a custom statement

  1. Verify that you are in input screen view. Custom statements are not available in form view.
  2. With the cursor located in a field that meets the above criteria, choose Edit > Custom Statements. The Custom Statement dialog opens.
  3. Enter the title of the custom statement. UltraTax CS includes this title on the statement when you print it.
  4. From the drop-down list, select the format for this statement. Note that the number in parentheses following Description represents the number of characters you can enter in the statement's Description field. Note that you can also select "none" in this field to prevent this custom statement from being attached to any other clients.
  5. Click OK to close the dialog. The custom statement is now indicated by the Statement button to the left of the field and a green vertical bar to the right.
  6. Click the Statement button to open the custom statement and enter the detailed information.

Note: You can set up custom statements in any client and have the statement available in all other clients. Also, if you are on a network, the statements you add will be available to all UltraTax CS users.
