To open the New Plan dialog, choose File > New or click the New Plan New Plan button button. You can then enter information to create a new tax plan.

To open the Import New Plan dialog, begin the process of importing data from UltraTax/1040 or importing data from GoSystem Tax RS.

To open the Plan Information dialog, choose File > Plan Information or click the Plan Information Plan Information button button. You can then edit the information for an open tax plan.

General tab

If you create or import a new plan, use this field to enter a unique identification code, up to 11 characters.

Use the drop-down list attached to this field to assign the plan to an existing preparer, or select <Default> if you do not want to specify a preparer for the plan.

Notes

  • The name you select in the Assigned to field can be inserted into client letters (for details, see Inserting plan data into a client letter). However, if you entered a name in the Name to appear on letter field in the Preparer Options dialog, that name will be inserted into client letters instead of the name you select in the Assigned to field.
  • To add a preparer, choose Tools > Setup Preparers when a plan is not open.

Enter the new plan's starting year in this field or use the arrows to select a year. If you import UltraTax/1040 or GoSystem Tax RS data into a new plan, this field displays the tax year of the data being imported.

Note: If importing data, this field is not available unless the Annualized Plan checkbox is marked, in which case you can select the tax year of the data being imported or one of the two subsequent years.

Enter the number of alternatives in the new plan or use the arrows to select a number.

Note: This field is not available for a TCJA Comparison Plan.

Enter the number of years to include in the new plan or use the arrows to select a number.

Note: This field is not available for a TCJA Comparison Plan.

Enter the year for a Family plan or use the arrows to select a year.

Notes

  • A Family plan cannot include more than one year.
  • This field is available only if you mark the Family Plan checkbox.
  • This field is not available for a TCJA Comparison Plan.

Enter the number of children for a Family plan or use the arrows to select a number.

Note: This field is available only if you mark the Family Plan checkbox.

Use this field to enter or edit the plan's description. The description can include up to 50 characters. When you open a plan via the Open Plan dialog, this information appears in the Plan Description field when the plan is highlighted.

Enter a keyword in the this field to help distinguish this plan from other plans. Keywords can be used to search or sort the list of available plans when opening plans via the Open Plan dialog.

If licensed, select the taxpayer's resident state from the drop-down list.

To delete a resident state, highlight the state postal code in this field and press DELETE.

Notes

  • Planner CS allows each plan to have one state designated as a resident state.
  • This field is not available for Annualized plans.
  • If you are importing data from UltraTax/1040 into a new plan, the UltraTax/1040 return's resident state is automatically selected.

If licensed, click this button, mark or clear the checkbox next to each nonresident state you want to add or remove, and click OK.

Notes

  • This button is not available for Annualized plans.
  • If you are importing data from UltraTax/1040 into a new plan, the UltraTax/1040 return's nonresident states are automatically selected.

Click this button to open the Password dialog, then enter, change, or delete a password for a plan. Click OK when finished.

Mark this checkbox to create a Family plan.

A Family plan enables you to analyze how the investment income of minor children will affect the parents' and the entire family's total tax liability.

Planner CS will create a plan with one column for the parents' information and one column each for the children's information, depending on the number specified in the Number of children field. Note that Family plans are limited to one year of information.

Notes

  • When you import data from UltraTax/1040 or GoSystem Tax RS, the application imports the parents' data.
  • This field is not available for a TCJA Comparison Plan.

Mark this checkbox to display your plan in single base year format. Once the plan is imported, you can choose View > Single Base year to hide or unhide the single base year format. For more information, see Viewing plans in single base year format

Note: This checkbox is not available if the plan includes fewer than two years or two alternatives, or if you mark the Family plan checkbox.

Mark this checkbox to create an Annualized plan.

Notes

  • An Annualized plan cannot also be a Family plan or display a single base year.
  • This checkbox is not available in a TCJA Comparison Plan.

If you import data, mark this checkbox to have Planner CS copy the imported plan data into the first year of all alternatives in the plan.

  • To have the data copied into all years and all alternatives, mark both the Copy across all alternatives and the Copy across all years checkboxes.
  • This checkbox is not available when you mark the Annualized Plan checkbox.
  • This checkbox is not available when you mark the Display single base year checkbox. You can clear the Display single base year checkbox and convert the plan to the single base year format after importing by choosing View > Single Base Year.
  • This checkbox is not available in a TCJA Comparison Plan.
  • This checkbox is available only when you import data.

If you import data, mark this checkbox to have Planner CS copy the imported plan data into every year of the first alternative in the plan.

Client Information tab

Use these fields to enter or edit the taxpayer's name, Social Security number, and date of birth.

Note: The taxpayer's and spouse's dates of birth are used in various federal and state calculations.

Use this field to enter or edit the salutation. By default, Planner CS will enter the taxpayer and spouse's first names into this field. You can edit this field to change the salutation variable used with .RTF and .doc custom and template letters.

Use these fields to enter or edit the taxpayer's address and phone number.

Children's Names tab

Note: This tab is only available when you mark the Family Plan checkbox.

Enter the name of the first child in this field. To add other children's names, highlight the default name in the Children Included in Plan pane and enter the name of the child here.

This pane lists the names of the children included in the Family plan. To replace the default names, highlight a default name in the Children Included in Plan pane and enter the child's actual name in the Child's Name field.
