Citrix Client overview

Show expandable text

In relation to the Digita Virtual Office environment, Citrix is a third-party application that allows remote desktop connections. Citrix must be installed on any computer on which you will run applications in the Digita Virtual Office environment.

Your firm may also implement Citrix if you host a terminal services/remote desktop environment. In this scenario, we recommend that your firm relies on a qualified and certified terminal server professional to handle the installation of Digita Professional Suite applications in a terminal server environment.

Supported version

For running applications in the Digita Virtual Office environment, we support version 14.1.0.0 of the Citrix client.

Note: Although you may be able to run applications using other versions of the Citrix client, we support only version 14.1.0.0. If you install multiple Citrix applications on a computer, you may experience performance issues. As a best practice, you should install only the supported version of the Citrix client on a computer that you will use to run applications in the Digita Virtual Office environment.

Best practices

Listed are the recommended best practices when running Citrix with the Digita Professional Suite.

Because Digita Virtual Office is accessed via the Internet and information travels through an Internet connection, the performance of the software is subject to the same speed variations experienced using the web. For this reason, the bandwidth used when accessing the Internet has a significant impact on the performance of the software.

At a minimum, 128 Kbps for up to four users and 32 Kbps for each additional user should be dedicated to running the Citrix client. To achieve optimal product performance, we recommend at least 64 Kbps per user. Examples of Internet connections that meet these recommendations include dual-channel ISDN, cable modem, ADSL or DSL, T1, and T3.

Note:

  • Wireless Internet connections are not supported and not recommended for Citrix connections due to the instability of the wireless signal. Performance on wireless networks cannot be guaranteed.
  • We do not recommend running Digita Virtual Office over satellite or microwave Internet connections.
  • The above bandwidth recommendations are solely for running Citrix for Digita Virtual Office. Keep in mind that your firm will require additional bandwidth for other business needs.

For the Citrix Client to function properly, the .ica file type must be excluded from antivirus scanning. It is also important that the .ica file extension is associated with the Citrix application in your Windows operating environment. To learn how to associate a file type with a program in Windows, see the Microsoft article Change which programs Windows uses by default External link .

Additionally, make sure that appropriate permissions are set to the following folders:

  • C:\Program Files\Citrix\ICA Client
  • C:\Program Files\Citrix\Workspace
  • C:\Program Files\VO Citrix
  • C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\ICA Client
  • C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Citrix

Because Citrix will occasionally need to communicate with local files and possibly with external storage devices, appropriate session security should be set. You will most likely be prompted automatically to grant security access the first time you launch Citrix. However, if you need to set up access manually, you can use the Citrix Connection Center.

  1. In your computer’s Windows system tray, look for the black and white Citrix Workspace icon (you may have to click the Show hidden icons arrow).
  2. Right-click the Citrix icon and choose About.
  3. On the About Citrix Workspace dialog, click Advanced to expand that menu.
  4. Click the Connection Center link.
  5. On the Citrix Connection Center dialog, click the name of the server to which you are connected to access the items on the right-hand side under Session Security.
  6. Under the drop-down menus for Files and USB/Other Devices, select Full Access and then click Close to save the changes.
  7. Click OK to close the About Citrix Workspace dialog.

There are a few known firewall configuration issues that affect performance on Digita Virtual Office:

  • F5 – Nagel Algorithm settings
  • SonicWall – Deep Packet Inspection settings and or Flexible Packet Inspection Settings

Settings for other hardware and software firewalls may cause similar effects. These should be addressed by a qualified IT professional or product support technicians for the firewall in use.

Printers
During the initial launch of the Citrix client, Citrix searches for and connects to all printers connected to the workstation. The process of auto-creating and mapping printers on Digita Virtual Office servers can be resource intensive. The number of printers installed on your local workstation has a direct impact on the amount of time required to log in to the Digita Virtual Office server. Deleting any unused or test printers will help maintain server responsiveness and improve login times.

To view the printers and devices that are connected to your computer in Windows and learn how to manage them, see the Microsoft article Fix printer problems in Windows 8.1 External link .

Scanners
You are able to scan into multiple Digita Virtual Office applications using TWAIN redirection built in to the Citrix client. As long you are using a Citrix-compatible scanner with a TWAIN or WIA driver installed, Citrix should be able to recognize and use your connected device.

Note: For assistance installing, configuring or troubleshooting your device and the appropriate print or scan drivers for it, consult your qualified IT professional or the hardware manufacturer.

Troubleshooting

Below are a few examples of issues that have been observed with Citrix, along with common troubleshooting processes. Click the links below for detailed information on each issue.

This issue can sometimes occur in the Digita Virtual Office environment. The application is open, but the window is off screen and not visible on the available monitors. This can be caused by switching from a multiple-monitor to a single-monitor setup between Citrix sessions, or by other related monitor and video card configurations. To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Hold down the Shift key while right-clicking the application on the Windows taskbar.
  2. Choose Maximize. This should cause the application to appear on one of the available monitors on your workstation.

On Windows 10, if the above steps do not work:

  1. Right-click on your desktop and choose Display settings.
  2. Click Display in the menu on the left.
  3. Select each monitor and use the Change the size of text, apps, and other items slider to set the same DPI percentage for all monitors.
  4. Sign out of Windows and back in.

Note: If this process is unsuccessful, contact our Support team for further assistance.

Login times, as well as data entry and general application performance, are largely dependent on connection latency and bandwidth. You will want to limit unnecessary bandwidth-intensive processes in your office (for example, Internet radio or streaming video) to avoid compromising the quality of your communication with the Digita Virtual Office server. While most websites are static and typically unaffected by intermittent connection fluctuations, Digita Virtual Office applications through Citrix require a persistent connection and thus are much more sensitive to internet issues that would otherwise go unnoticed. Your qualified IT professional and our Support team can assist with running connection tests to help pinpoint possible network connectivity issues.

If data entry is slow in Digita Virtual Office applications, but connection latency and bandwidth appear fine, performance issues may be caused by interference from antivirus or other third-party applications, or by certain firewall settings. Firewalls and antivirus programs have many different settings that can impact performance. For example, if exclusions are not set for local Citrix files and folders, the active scanning of the antivirus application may degrade performance. You should consult with a qualified IT professional to optimize settings for your environment.

Note: If you have recently changed your version of Citrix and begin to experience issues, your antivirus software may need to have exclusions added for the new Citrix installation.

In certain situations — usually immediately after an installation of Citrix — you may see an error message when launching a Digita Virtual Office application, or a file may attempt to open in the incorrect application, such as Adobe Reader or Microsoft Edge. In these situations, the .ica file type that Digita Virtual Office uses may not be associated with the correct application. Follow the instructions below to resolve this file association issue.

  1. On Windows 8 and Windows 10, press the Windows logo key + X on your keyboard to open the WinX menu.
  2. Click Control Panel and then click Default Programs.
  3. Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
  4. In the list of file extensions, select .ica and click the Change program... button in the right-hand corner of the dialog.
  5. On Windows 8 and Windows 10, click the More options button at the bottom, and then click Look for another app on this PC.
  6. In Windows Explorer, browse to C:\Program Files\Citrix\ICA Client ( C:\Program Files (x86)\... if using a 64-bit machine).
  7. In this folder, select the wfcrun32 application file and click Open.
  8. You can click OK or Close through the remaining open dialogs to save these changes.

If the "Unable to Parse Command Line" Error Remains

If you continue to see this error after following these steps, it may be a result of a bad registry key on your machine. While rare, you can resolve this issue using the following steps.

Because serious issues with the operating system may occur if registry changes are made improperly, we recommend that your qualified IT professional performs any registry changes and that a backup of the registry is made before proceeding with any changes.

  1. Press the WINDOWS key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Enter regedit and click OK.
  3. In the Registry Editor, browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\wfica32.exe\shell\open\command\. If you do not see these folders, then these steps do not apply to the issue you are currently having.
  4. Right-click the (Default) entry and click Modify.
  5. In the Value field, remove the quotation marks so that the field reads C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\ICA Client\wfica32.exe %1.
  6. Click OK and close the Registry Editor, then attempt to launch your Digita Virtual Office application again.

It is sometimes necessary to uninstall and then reinstall Citrix applications to repair them. Follow the steps below to remove Citrix.

On Windows 8:

  1. Press the Windows logo key + X on your keyboard to open the WinX menu.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Click Uninstall a Program under Programs in the Category view, or click Programs and Features in the Large icons or Small icons view.
  4. Highlight the Citrix program(s). (If VO Citrix version 14.1.0.0 is listed, then remove that first.)
  5. Click Uninstall, which is above the program list.
  6. Once all Citrix applications are uninstalled, make sure the following folders no longer exist on your workstation. If they do exist, delete or rename the folders.
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix

    • C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Citrix
    • C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\ICA Client
    • C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Citrix
    • C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\ICA Client

Note: The AppData folder is hidden by default. You may need to make hidden folders visible on their machine to gain access to it, or manually enter the path in the address bar in Windows Explorer to open the folder.

On Windows 10:

  1. Click the Start menu, then choose Settings.
  2. Choose System > Apps & features.
  3. Click VO Citrix version 14.1.0.0 in the list of programs, then click Uninstall.
  4. Click Citrix Workspace in the list of programs, then click Uninstall.

When opening applications on Windows 8 or 10, the screen may flicker and the application may not open. This is caused by an issue with the new Windows 8.1 DPI scaling function.

On Windows 8:

  1. Open the Control Panel and click Display.
  2. Mark the Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays checkbox, then click Apply.
  3. Log off and log back on.
